Horsepower Rankings: Talladega

Oct 8th, 2008

After a month of nip-and-tuck battles for the right to sit atop Athlon Sports' weekly Horsepower Rankings, there is finally a bit of separation. Jimmie Johnson weaved his way through the twisted sheet metal and blown tires of Talladega to emerge the points leader by a 72-point margin over Carl Edwards.

Stewart wins, Chasers struggle in wild Talladega affair

Oct 6th, 2008

A typical wild day at Talladega ended with a typical controversial NASCAR judgement call. When the smoke cleared from the twisted, smoldering wreck of trashed racecars in the AMP Energy 500, it was Tony Stewart who was awarded the win over DEI teammates Regan Smith and Paul Menard.

Horsepower Rankings: Kansas

Oct 1st, 2008

Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson have accounted for the last seven wins on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. Considering that Johnson is the most recent victor, he assumes the top spot in Athlon Sports' weekly Horsepower Rankings. But don't believe for a second that Biffle and Edwards are too far behind.

1. Jimmie Johnson  Survives carnage, settles for ninth at Talladega. Don’t bother racing for the win, Jimmie, that’s not what your fans came to see, after all.

2. Carl Edwards  Oops. Well, at least he manned up and took responsibility for the wreck he caused.

3. Greg Biffle  Biffle didn’t need another reason to not like his teammate, but he got one last Sunday.

4. Jeff Burton  Slid through two wrecks to finish fourth, which could pay big dividends as the Chase wears on.

5. Kevin Harvick  Another guy who most likely is not happy with Carl this week, Kevin had a top-5 car until the wreck.

6. Matt Kenseth  See: Greg Biffle.

7. Clint Bowyer  Wisely stuck to Jeff Burton’s bumper all day and, accordingly, finished fifth.

8. Denny Hamlin  Give The King a call, Denny. He has plenty of Goody’s Headache Powder for you.

9. Dale Earnhardt, Jr.  At least it wasn't the strategy that took him out of contention this week. Well, not his strategy, anyway.

10. Jeff Gordon  Victim of Reutimann’s detonating tire. It isn’t getting any prettier in the 24 shop, is it?

11. Tony Stewart  Send France, Helton and Hunter a nice Christmas gift this year, Tony. You owe them big time for that one.

12. Kyle Busch  Was he even entered in the Talladega race?

13. Mark Martin  Credit Mark for having the good sense to not even run last weekend.

14. David Ragan  This boy can get it done on the plate tracks. He scored a third-place finish, his fourth top 5 in eight career plate-track starts.

15. David Reutimann  Most likely has some choice words for Goodyear after his tire exploded while driving in a straight line.

Just off the lead pack:  Kurt Busch, Bobby Labonte, Casey Mears, Elliott Sadler, Martin Truex, Jr.
