Stewart in Talks with Haas CNC Racing?
The Tony Stewart/Joe Gibbs Racing relationship that has weathered many a storm looks to be reaching port. Athlon Sports has learned through multiple sources that Stewart and Joe Gibbs Racing officials are exploring options concerning the two-time Cup champion's future with the organization.
Sources say Stewart has been in negotiations to drive for Haas CNC Racing in 2009. Haas CNC currently fields the Nos. 66 and 70 Chevrolets and happens to be a satellite operation of Hendrick Motorsports. The deal would include part-ownership of the fledgling operation for Stewart as well as additional support from HMS.
Neither party would confirm nor deny that discussions have taken place that would land Stewart, a 32-time Cup victor, back in the Chevy camp. However, a source speaking on a condition of anonymity told Athlon Sports that not only have discussions taken place, but talks are underway to make this deal a reality.
Although Stewart is under contract to JGR through the 2009 season, a release from the contract would not be unprecedented. Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray were granted releases from their respective teams in 2005.
Stewart has driven for JGR since he began his NASCAR career in 1999. At the time, Gibbs fielded Pontiacs but switched to Chevy in 2003, where it remained until its jump to Toyota following the 2007 season. Tony Stewart Racing, which fields USAC and World of Outlaws teams, is still backed by Chevrolet.
