Last second holiday shoppers are hoping to come through in the clutch like Kobe Bryant. Here’s a few sports-related gift ideas for those still looking for the perfect video game, book, movie or equipment for friends and family.
Type: Video Game
Title: NBA 2K10
By: 2K Sports
Price Range: $50-60
For: Basketball fans, gamers
The best basketball video game yet made — with respect to 1993 cult classic NBA Jam, which obviously was “on fire” — the 10th anniversary edition of 2K Sports’ NBA series is more lifelike than many families’ driveway pickup games during the holidays.
NBA 2K10 has "taken over" graphically and creatively, with recognizable player faces and moves — with Kobe Bryant’s “inside, reverse pivot” fadeaway jumper or Derrick Rose’s crossover dribble and first step blow by — as well as the usual in-season, dynasty and create-a-player options.
Although Kobe’s “awesome is just better than your awesome,” as he says, both gamers and basketball fans will be all over this like the Black Mamba on any 2-guard this side of D-Wade or Ray Allen. Until “Grand Theft Auto: Tiger Woods’ Escape” comes out, this is the best sports game on the market.
Type: Book
Title: The Blind Side:
Evolution of a Game (2006)
Written By: Michael Lewis
Price Range: $15-25
For: Football fans, anyone who has seen the movie
This 2006 New York Times bestselling novel by Michael Lewis is based on the rags to riches story of Michael Oher — who went from being a homeless teenager in Memphis to becoming a first round NFL draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens, thanks largely to the generosity of his adopted Tuohy family.
Lewis, who also wrote Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game and Liar’s Poker, tells a well-crafted, complicated story that covers every angle — from the football basics (the term "blind side” refers to the left offensive tackle, who protects a right-handed quarterback’s back on passing plays), socioeconomic implications and the fascinating world of college football recruiting.
Now a major motion picture directed by John Lee Hancock, starring Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw, The Blind Side has a wide appeal. Judging by the overwhelming success of the film, everyone from grandmothers to high schoolers can relate to the heartwarming story of Oher and the Tuohy family.
Type: Movie
Title: Field of Dreams (1989):
20th Anniversary Edition
Directed By: Phil Alden Robinson
Starring: Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones
Price Range: $15-25
For: Baseball fans, anyone who has not seen the movie
This 1989 classic starring Kevin Costner turns 20 years old this year. The story of an Iowan farmer who hears the advice “If you build it, he will come,” while walking through his cornfields and decides to build a baseball field is a timeless, fantastic tall tale of faith, family and baseball.
Originally based on the novel Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella, the vision of director Phil Alden Robinson and music of James Horner earned Field of Dreams three nominations for major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Original Score and Adapted Screenplay). Since then, many of the film’s scenes and lines have become engrained in pop culture — more so than a few nieces, nephews or grandchildren may realize.
Field of Dreams is a family friendly movie perfect for a holiday crowd. “If you buy it, they will come,” and may even be inspired for one last game of catch in the snow before driving home or fading away into a cornfield.

Title: ESPN Jr. Better Batter Baseball
By: Fisher-Price
Price Range: $40-50 (Plus 3 C alkaline batteries, not included)
For: Little Leaguers headed to the big leagues
It’s never too early to start practicing for an MLB career. Young sluggers (recommended for ages 3-to-6 years old) everywhere should take a swing at the ESPN Jr. Better Batter Baseball by Fisher Price.
An advanced electronic version of the classic tee-ball set, the ESPN Jr. Better Batter Baseball uses a different methodology to teach hitting. A mechanical arm picks up the baseball and lifts it into position for the ball to hang suspended in the air awaiting a swing by the batter. Afterwards, the player just hits the plate to repeat the process.
The clever devise also has adjustable height options and background noises — fans cheering, music, etc. — that add a little something extra. In another era, some might say the ESPN Jr. Better Batter Baseball by Fisher-Price is tee-ball on steroids. But it’s really just a backyard batting cage for a future Little Leaguer.
Type: Adults
Title: SkyCaddie SG-5
By: SkyGolf
Price Range: $400-450
For: Golfers without a full-time caddy
Named the Official GPS (Global Positioning System) rangefinder of the PGA of America as well as the only Gold winner on the 2009 Golf Digest hot list for GPS rangefinders, the SkyCaddie SG-5 by SkyGolf is as good as it gets for everyone from weekend duffers to Q School hopefuls.
The well-equipped golfer no longer has to eyeball, guesstimate or refer to a fairway marker in order to determine the distance to the hole and what club to select. Now, this hand-held, high-tech GPS rangefinder can give instant distances for up to 40 targets per hole, with a digital scorecard, a color screen and countless other features.
It may be a little on the steep side, price-wise. But for avid golfers, the SkyCaddie SG-5 — which also requires a yearly subscription fee of between $30-60 annually — will be worth its weight in gold once the scores start dropping and the side bets start rolling in at the 19th hole.
