NFL News: Donovan McNabb, a borderline Hall of Fame quarterback, has been traded from the Washington Redskins to the Minnesota Vikings.
The inner working of the deal, particularly the compensation of McNabb, are not official yet. It appears the Redskins will receive a 2012 sixth-round pick and a 2013 sixth-round pick in exchange for the former Philadelphia Eagle star quarterback.
McNabb was set to make $14.75 million this year for the Skins and Mike Shanahan was clearly not prepared to pay that amount of money for a player entering his 13th season in the NFL. The amount of money the Vikings will be pay McNabb is still unclear, but it will certainly be much less than the $15 million he was due in Washington. The deal could be heavily influenced by performance incentives.
The six-time Pro Bowler fills a huge hole for the Vikings. He will undoubtedly be the starter under center, and ideally, mentor 2011 first-round pick Christian Ponder. The former Florida State signal caller tweeted about the move: "Excited to have McNabb join. Will learn a lot from a Pro Bowler. But that doesn't mean I'm not still fighting to start week 1!" Ponder might be the future in Minneapolis, but does not look to be the present.
McNabb is 16th all-time in NFL history with 36,250 passing yards, 23rd all-time with 230 touchdown passes and 23rd all-time with a career QB rating of 85.7. He is 97-57-1 all-time as an NFL starter and 9-7 in the postseason, including one memorable trip to the Super Bowl in 2004.
