Justin Rose shot an even-par 70 on Sunday at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., to win the 113th U.S. Open and claim his first major championship. Rose, who finished with a final score of +1, beat Jason Day and Phil Mickelson by two strokes to become the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open in 43 years. Prior to Rose, the last Englishman to win the U.S. Open was Tony Jacklin in 1970 while Nick Faldo was the last countryman to win any of golf's four majors when he claimed the green jacket at The Masters in 1996. This was Rose's first major title in 37 tries, with his best previous finish being a tie for third in last year's PGA Championship. The 32-year-old Rose now has five career PGA Tour wins to go along with six European Tour victories. Mickelson's runner-up finish was his record sixth at the U.S. Open and his eighth 2nd-place showing at a major in his Hall of Fame career. The only one with more runner-up finishes at any of the majors is Jack Nicklaus' seven at the British Open.
