Player of the Week: Chase Daniel, QB, Missouri
Daniel not only kept his team afloat in the national championship race, he catapulted it to the top. Daniel’s Tigers defeated the previously unbeaten Kansas Jayhawks Saturday in Kansas City to clinch the Big 12 North title and a spot in the league championship game against Oklahoma. Daniel’s 40-of-49 effort for 361 yards and three touchdowns sent the Tigers to victory and gave them their first No. 1 national ranking since 1960.
Freshman of the Week: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
Coming off a week in which he sustained a concussion, Bradford wins this award not only for his toughness, but for completing 11-of-15 passes and throwing four touchdowns in leading his team to victory in the Bedlam Series and clinching a spot in the Big 12 championship. Bradford’s four touchdowns also set a new NCAA freshman record for TD passes at 32, passing the previous record of 29, which was set by Nevada's David Neill in 1998 and tied last season by Texas’ Colt McCoy.
Change at the top
The Big 12 has been front and center in coaching changes taking place already this offseason. Three Big 12 schools already have vacancies after removing their previous coaches immediately following their seasons. Guy Morriss, Bill Callahan and Dennis Franchione will no longer be coaching at Baylor, Nebraska and Texas A&M, respectively. None of those three really comes as a big surprise, although Callahan and Franchione both leave their schools with winning records.
Record-setting freshmen
You know it’s been a special year in the Big 12 for prominent freshmen when the aforementioned Sam Bradford sets the NCAA mark for touchdown passes by a frosh and leads the nation in passing efficiency yet doesn’t even earn one of the co-freshman of the year awards from the conference. Those honors went to Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree, who set numerous receiving records of his own, and Missouri wide receiver/kick returner Jeremy Maclin, who quickly became one of the conference’s most versatile and dangerous playmakers.
