Extra Points: Week 7

OH FOR SIX
The Redskins are 4-2 — something for their fans to get excited about, considering they’ve had only one winning season this millennium. They have a productive young quarterback in Jason Campbell firing away at a prolific trio of veteran receivers in Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El and Keenan McCardell. Oh, wait a minute. Did we say “productive” and “prolific?” True, those three wideouts have run under 106 touchdowns in their careers. None, however, have come in 2007. Incredibly, Washington has yet to complete a six-pointer to a wide receiver. Not that it’s fair to compare mere mortal to the Patriots, but Tom Brady has hit four different WRs for 19 TDs.

DECISIVE DO-OVER
The reinstatement of talented wideout Koren Robinson, this time to the Packers roster, brought to mind 2005, when Vikings players voted the talented receiver their Ed Block Courage Award, given to teammates who “embody everything that is positive about professional athletes as they serve as inspirations in their locker rooms and constructive role models in their communities.” At the time, Robinson apparently had turned around his life following multiple rehab stints and an NFL suspension, reportedly for using ecstasy. Of course, he relapsed and was back on suspension for all of ’06 as punishment for numerous alcohol-related arrests. Robinson is a good guy with a bad problem. This is his last chance, and we’re rooting for him. Brett Favre, who’s been down this road a piece, should be a big help.

WORD OUT
Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock, who is black, recently wrote on FoxSports.com that the Colts and Patriots are the palest teams in the NFL, with 24 and 23 non-African-Americans on their rosters, respectively. He points out that they are also, evidently, the two best teams in the NFL. His thesis is that hip-hop culture (not race) is counterproductive in the league, and players who live it “are being rejected because they’re not good for business and, most important, don’t contribute to a consistent winning environment.” Whitlock cites a lengthy list of black players he calls “bojanglers” who are undermining the pioneering efforts of those who came before, such as Jim Brown, Walter Payton and early superstars of color in other sports. He goes so far as to chide the mainstream media for ignoring the issue. Now that that door’s been cracked, expect to hear more discussion on the topic — if anyone is bold enough to tackle it.

BUMP AND RUN
Extra Points’ recurring installment of slapdash observation and imprudent opinion:

Quarterbacks are becoming like left-handed pitchers; you can never have enough of them. More than half the teams in the league have already installed their back-ups for something beyond mop-up duty.

What do last weekend’s 1-2-3 yards-from-scrimmage leaders — Earnest Graham, Kenny Watson and Wes Welker — have in common? None were drafted.

We recently ran across a list of the 10 toughest coaching jobs in sports on which the Raiders were No. 3 and the Cowboys No. 8. From our point of view, it would be easier to work for a demanding, meddling, but first-class owner who will spend money and is driven to win such as Jerry Jones than a bow tie-wearing, nepotistic vacant suit such as Bill Bidwell. His Cardinals have sat out 41 of the 45 playoffs since he’s had anything at all to do with them, and they’ve had one winning season since 1985. Now THAT’S a tough job.

To get the devout Herm Edwards to appear on its program, Fox Sports Net is taping a segment next week with the one-time title, “Best Darn Sports Show Period.” We spit you not.

QUOTABLE
“[They] find the most handsome guy on the sideline, and that just happens to be me.” — T.O. on why the TV cameras so often seem to be focused on him after an ineffective offensive play.

“It’s like me trying to learn Chinese in 48 hours.” — RB Michael Bennett on his task of digesting the Bucs playbook in time for a game after they acquired him from the Chiefs in mid-week.

“We can’t win in America.” — Jason Taylor as his 0-7 Dolphins headed to London to play the Giants.

“DeAngelo Hall is loving himself right now.” — ABC’s Mike Tirico after a Hall interception.

“I didn’t know that you could show that on TV.” — Jimmy Kimmel, visitor to the booth.
