Week 14 National Notebook
Georgia Tech beat its in-state rival for the first time since 2000 while Kansas won the Border War and Boston College secured a spot in the ACC title game. Mitch Light looks at Week 14 of the college football landscape in his National Notebook.
ACC: A season unlike any other
The ACC never has seen a season like this one. Strangely, though, the league’s championship game will feature a familiar matchup: Boston College and Virginia Tech.
Week 14: North Carolina at Duke
Two months ago, this season-ending rivalry game had a good chance to be more important than usual. But now that the battle for the Victory Bell is here, there aren’t many reasons to be excited.
Week 13 National Notebook
Oklahoma had one of the most impressive single-game performances this season by crushing Texas Tech while Utah secured a BCS Bowl bid with a victory in the Holy War. Mitch Light takes a look around Week 13 of the college football landscape in his National Notebook.
ACC: Title derby down to four teams
It has taken 13 weeks — and 11 games for every team in the conference — but the ACC championship picture finally is beginning to come into focus. Nine teams began this week with a mathematical chance to win the conference title, but the events of the weekend cut that number to four.
Week 13: Duke at Virginia Tech
Without question, Duke has taken a step forward this season and shouldn’t be viewed the same way as the Duke squads that won a total of four games over the last four years. Still, the Blue Devils’ bus will be a welcome site for Virginia Tech’s players when it pulls into Lane Stadium this weekend.
Week 12 National Notebook
Vanderbilt became eligible for its first bowl since 1982 and Baylor knocked off Texas A&M for the second time in five years. Mitch Light looks at these teams and more in his Week 12 National Notebook.
ACC: Maryland drops fourth ranked opponent
It wouldn’t be a typical week in the ACC without a team going from invisible to invincible. For the third time this season, that team was Maryland.
Week 12: Duke at Clemson
This contest is a rare ACC game that doesn’t impact a division-championship race. Duke and Clemson have been eliminated from title contention, but both are holding out hope of earning a spot in a bowl game this season.
Five burning questions: Week 12
Athlon's editors debate which teams needs to be on upset alert this weekend, which freshman has played himself into early 2009 Heisman Trophy consideration and more in this week's Five Burning Questions.
ACC: Another week of surprising results
It was another week of surprising results in the ACC — not so much which teams won, but by how many points they triumphed.
Week 11: N.C. State at Duke
Teams around the ACC have taken turns beating up on Duke over the years, knowing that they could get a win over the Blue Devils even if they were struggling against everyone else. Unfortunately for N.C. State, the league’s unbalanced schedule prevented the Wolfpack from getting its swings in over the last four seasons.
ACC: Two quarterbacks working for Miami
The old saying is that a team with two quarterbacks actually has none. But in the case of this year’s Miami squad, a team with two quarterbacks actually has, well, two quarterbacks. Redshirt freshman Robert Marve and true freshman Jacory Harris teamed up in fine fashion again this weekend, leading the Hurricanes past Virginia 24-17 in overtime.
Week 10: Duke at Wake Forest
There was a time when no one would have been surprised to see perennial ACC doormats Duke and Wake Forest with the same record at the start of November — but it’s shocking this season.
Week 9 National Notebook
Teams of the week Penn State and Georgia picked up wins in marquee matchups while Texas Tech rolled over Kansas on the road. Mitch Light takes a look around the college football landscape in his Week 9 National Notebook.
ACC: Seminoles land in familiar territory
Florida State isn’t what it used to be. Yet halfway through the conference schedule, Florida State is where it used to be: atop the ACC.
Under The Radar: Week 9
The Big 12, Big Ten and SEC all have marquee match-ups this weekend. But the battle for Pac-10 supremacy will also take place in Tuscan, Arizona. Mike Stoops and Co. are set to take on the USC Trojans late Saturday night.
Week 9: Duke at Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt has been stuck on five wins for the last two weeks and a win over Duke would mean bowl eligibility. With Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee and Wake Forest in the final four weeks, this appears to be the Commodores best shot at the important sixth win.
