5. Missouri vs ND, Sep. 9, 1978
1 of 6
Missouri entered the '78 season off a 4-7 record the previous year and opened the season at Notre Dame -- the defending national champions. Yet Missouri's defense pitched a shutout, and Jeff Brockhaus converted a fourth-quarter field goal to give the Tigers a stunning 3-0 win in South Bend. Joe Montana led Notre Dame inside Missouri's 25-yard line five times but the Irish could never dent the scoreboard and Missouri walked away with its second improbable win at Notre Dame Stadium in six years.

Wilder's fourth touchdown late in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning points and clinched a Liberty Bowl berth for the Tigers.Other Mizzou Content:

Missouri went to South Bend as 35-point underdogs against No. 8 Notre Dame. The Tigers lost 62-0 to Nebraska the week before, yet were able to spring a 30-26 upset before a stunned crowd at Notre Dame Stadium. Don Johnson ran for two touchdowns, Missouri forced four turnovers and the Tigers withstood a late ND rally. The win sparked Missouri to a five-game win streak and eventual bid to the Fiesta Bowl.

Dan Devine's Tigers broke a 14-year losing streak to Oklahoma and became No. 1 in the AP poll after a 41-19 thrashing in Norman. The Tigers improved to 9-0 and appeared poised for the first national championship in program history. However, the Tigers were upset by Kansas in the final week of the season (a game that was later forfeited by KU due to an ineligible player) before beating Navy in the Orange Bowl. The Tigers finished No. 5.
