The Analysis

Florida’s Percy Harvin has become the benchmark for measuring versatile inside-outside type wide receivers. This year there are two Harvin-like players. One is ranked in the top 25, and one is Thomas. He can run a fly pattern and torch a defensive back on one play and will line up as tailback and take the pitch 80 yards the next. He glides in the open field, rarely getting caught from behind.

Thomas will be used in a variety of ways at Ohio State. The short passing game will be a huge factor, but it would be foolish not to line him up in the backfield and get him the ball in interesting situations. Tennessee’s Gerald Jones is a good comparison.

Thomas will have to work on his size and power if he expects to carry the ball at all.

Quarterback, running back, wide receiver, corner, safety, return man. This kid could end playing all of them. And don’t rule out quarterback either — at least for a few zone read packages. Either way, it will not take Thomas long to make his mark on college football.
