Futch has been committed to Miami since June 2007

The Analysis

Two words best describe this long, rangy athlete: physical specimen. The sheer size of this defensive back prospect is staggering. Playing mostly in the box in high school, Futch is excellent on the attack. He is a great blitzer off the edge and has a quick burst through traffic getting to the football. His ability to diagnose a play is still lacking a bit, and his read time is slow. Once he decides where to go, though, he explodes to the ball. His burst and explosion at the point of attack is fabulous.

Futch’s comfort around the line-of scrimmage and in traffic will likely lead to him putting on weight and playing that hybrid ‘rover’ position that Virginia Tech has used so effectively (Jimmy Williams, Aaron Rouse, Cam Chancellor). If he adds 20 pounds, he could be one of the top outside linebacker prospects in the nation. The problem is that Futch is headed to Miami as part of the best linebacker class in the nation. He might have trouble getting on the field right away. Futch has expressed interest in playing safety.
