The Analysis

It is very difficult to look slender at 300 pounds, but Shugarts almost does it. His tall, rangy frame is prototypical and affords him room to grow and get even bigger. What is even more impressive about his size is his athleticism. He has wonderful feet — they never stop moving — and shows great drive. This gives him the ability to get to the second level quickly. Once he engages defenders, they rarely get away from his mammoth grasp. His solid hand technique allows him to lock onto the opposition. He shoots his hands high and hard.

His mentality is even more intriguing. O-line is about attitude as much as anything else, and Shugarts has plenty of it. He has a mean streak and looks to bury smaller defenders. He also does a great job of constantly competing. He will never take a play off. Once he is finished with one tackler, he always looks for someone else to hit. Although he has great power and drive, he also does a solid job of body positioning. This makes him a solid seal/shield blocker as he works hard to try to turn people away from the ball.
