There's no joy at Athlon Sports with the report of starting quarterback Rhett Bomar's dismissal from the Oklahoma Sooners.
Bomar has been reportedly named ineligible by coach Bob Stoops for violating NCAA rules. Athlon Sports predicted that the second-year quarterback would guide Oklahoma back to the national title with the help of a healthy Adrian Peterson.
While we still see Oklahoma fielding a very formidable squad, the loss of an experienced quarterback hurts. Bomar received Holiday Bowl MVP honors and ranked at the top of the quarterback list in the Big 12, giving the Sooners the inside track to another conference title. Now it looks like Peterson – the 2004 Heisman Trophy runner up – will carry the load again.
Oklahoma no longer has a leg up on the rest of the Big 12 south with a returning quarterback. Now only Oklahoma State with Bobby Reid and Baylor with Shawn Bell return signal-callers in the division.
The games against Oregon, Texas Tech and Texas A&M certainly don’t look like guaranteed wins anymore while the Texas game will be that much more of a challenge. Whoever finds their quarterback faster could have the leg up.
