What better way to begin an enumeration of Nebraska's all-time team
than with two Heisman Trophy winners - Johnny Rodgers, a wingback
who was also the most feared kick returner of his day; and I-Back Mike
Rozier, who established school records with 2,148 rushing yards in 1983,
4,780 career rushing yards and 52 career touchdowns.
George Halas called Guy Chamberlin, a 1914-15 All-American, the
greatest two-way end of all time. Chamberlin was fast and deceptive,
impossible to cover on pass plays and a defensive terror. The best tight
end Nebraska has produced is still playing - going into this season,
senior Tracey Wistrom is tops in school history with 22.4 yards per catch.
Tommie Frazier gets the nod at quarterback. A four-year starter, Frazier led
the Huskers to back-to-back national titles in 1994 and '95, and was
named MVP of both championship games. Joining Frazier and Rozier in
the backfield are Bobby Reynolds, the Cornhuskers' first 2,000-yard
career rusher; and George Sauer, a fullback who led his team to a
24-3-1 three-year record and was named to Grantland Rice's All-America
team in 1933.
Certainly more than five offensive linemen have valid claims to all-time
status at Nebraska. We'll start with the five who won Outland Trophies -
Dave Rimington, Dean Steinkuhler, Will Shields, Zach Wiegert and Aaron
Taylor. Rimington won two (1981, '82). But we won't exclude Bob Brown, a
unanimous All-America guard in 1963.
Tackle Larry Jacobson and middle guard Rich Glover anchored the
defenses that brought national championships to Lincoln in 1970 and '71.
Jacobson brought home the Outland in 1971, then Glover captured both
the Outland and Lombardi Awards in 1972. Middle guard Wayne Meylan
and end Willie Harper were defensive stars at Nebraska during the Bob
Devaney years.
Ed Weir played tackle for the only teams to beat Notre Dame in 1923 and
'25 and was a unanimous All-American in 1924 and '25. "I pick Weir as
the best tackle I have ever seen." That was Knute Rockne speaking.
Linebacker Trev Alberts tops the Nebraska career sack list with 29.5; end
Grant Wistrom is second with 26.5. Wistrom ranks first in tackles for loss
with 58.5, Alberts is second at 45. Jerry Murtaugh, a 1970 All-American
who compiled 148 unassisted tackles in just three years, and Tom "Train
Wreck" Novak, the only four-time all-conference selection in school
history, join Alberts at linebacker.
Ralph Brown, a 1999 consensus All-American who broke up 50 passes
during his career, 22 more then any other Husker defender, is the latest
addition to the all-time Nebraska secondary. Dana Stephenson stands as
the school's career interception record holder with 14. Dave Butterfield,
Pat Fischer and 1966 All-American Larry Wachholtz round out the
defensive backfield.
Kris Brown has scored more points (388 on 217-of-222 extra points and
57-of-77 field goals) than any other player in Husker history, earning him
the honor of all-time placekicker. Punter was a little stickier. Mike Stigge
(1989-92) and Jesse Kosch (1994-97) were in the running, but Dan
Hadenfeldt's school career-best 44.5-yard average put him over the top.
