After all of the official visits and all of the courting, occasionally a prospect may still be undecided by signing day. It may not happen often, but it does occur. This was the case with All-America defensive tackle Lawrence "Mo" Dampeer. Offered by almost every top program in America, his list was initially narrowed down to Miami, Illinois, Ohio State and Oklahoma. He then pared the list down to two teams - hometown favorite Illinois and national power Oklahoma. He took some time to think it over, and after careful consideration he finally had a good feel for things. Two days after signing day, Dampeer signed with the Sooners, wanting to be part of the defensive tradition built under coach Bobby Stoops.
This late coup sealed the league recruiting title for Oklahoma, and some feel that Dampeer can have the same type of impact on the program as defensive lineman Tommie Harris had two years ago as a freshman.
Oklahoma had a terrific haul on the defensive side of the ball to go along with Dampeer. Safety Tony Cade is a big-time hitter who someday may approach the talent of former Sooner great Roy Williams. Linebackers Dane Zaslaw and Demario Pleasant come with lofty reputations as well. Offensively, quarterback Tommy Grady is a big, strong athlete with a live arm who should be a future star in Norman.
New Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione proved a worthy recruiting opponent for the rest of the Big 12. Defensive end Jason Jack and linebacker Justin Warren have a chance to come in and add depth to the defense. Junior college defensive lineman Mike Montgomery falls into that same category. Offensively, hulking offensive tackle Jorrie Adams comes to College Station with outstanding credentials as well.
For Texas, it was another top-caliber recruiting haul and one that should complement last year's top-rated class. Tight end Tony Hills Jr. was ranked No. 1 nationally at his position and was a major get for the Longhorns. Tailback Erik Hardeman will provide immediate depth in the backfield. Finding true cornerbacks who can play press coverage is hard, but Billy Pittman and Tarell Brown fit into that category.
Colorado and Nebraska picked up several blue chippers as well. The Buffaloes' class is led by hard-hitting safety Dominique Brooks, who comes from Texas. Junior college linebacker Lee Foliaki brings some major credentials to Boulder as well. The Huskers' top recruit is likely tight end Josh Mueller, a big, strong prospect. Offensive lineman Ryan Schuler has the same look as many of the other Nebraska road graders of the past.
Many other standouts inked with Big 12 schools, as well, including big-time defensive lineman Xavier Lawson-Kennedy, who is heading to Oklahoma State. Kansas State usually signs a few more junior college prospects than the rest of the league, and this year was no exception. Defensive lineman Malcolm Wooldridge and cornerback Corey Reddick expect to play immediately in Manhattan.
