1. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma (JR) — Bye Week — 4 — No. 4 overall QB
What can Bradford possibly do for an encore? The junior is coming off a record-setting season and in just two years, is Oklahoma's career leader in total offense and touchdown passes. Tossing 50 touchdowns once again may be difficult, but Bradford should reach at least reach the 40 mark. The Sooners have some holes to fill, including four starters up front and receivers Juaquin Iglesias and Manuel Johnson. Finding replacements at receiver is less of a concern, as Adron Tennell and Ryan Broyles are ready to step into larger roles, but replacing four starters up front won't be easy. After Houston's Case Keenum, expect a couple of different quarterbacks to get a look as the second one off the board. Bradford should be a first rounder, but some may cool on him due to the offensive line. Don't make that mistake, he's still a top-flight fantasy quarterback.
2008 stats — 374.60 fantasy points
Passing: 4,720 yds., 50 TDs, 8 INTs
Rushing: 47 yds., 5 TDs
2. Taylor Potts, Texas Tech (JR) — Bye Week — 10 — No. 5 overall QB
This is one of the more interesting aspects of college fantasy football. Despite never starting a game, Potts is among the top five fantasy quarterbacks for 2009. One look at Mike Leach’s track record in Lubbock gives a pretty good idea of what to expect and why he should be one of the first passers off the board. Under Leach, the Red Raiders have averaged 4,960 passing yards per season and it would be a major surprise to see much of a change this year. Potts won’t have the luxury of throwing to Michael Crabtree, but there are plenty of weapons, led by Detron Lewis and the emerging Lyle Leong. Potts won’t quite post Graham Harrell numbers, but should be a first rounder in 120 leagues this season and taken among the first seven quarterbacks off the board.
2008 stats — 16.40 fantasy points
Passing: 260 yds., 2 TDs, 1 INT
Rushing: none
3. Colt McCoy, Texas (SR) — Bye Week — 5 — No. 7 overall QB
McCoy is coming off his best season and it’s hard to imagine much of a fall this year. The senior completed a ridiculous 76.7 percent of his passes – a NCAA record – and only twice passed for less than 250 yards. Despite the loss of Quan Cosby, the Longhorns are in great shape at receiver and return four starters along the offensive line. McCoy posted 136 rushing attempts last year and the coaches probably won’t ask him to run as much this year. The coaching staff hopes they can get some help from a cast of options at running back, but if it sputters once again, McCoy could be asked to inch closer to 150 attempts. Last year was the first season McCoy managed to stay healthy and if he can avoid the injury bug once again, he should easily be among the top five fantasy quarterbacks. Expect McCoy to go in round one, anywhere from the second to seventh passer off the board.
2008 stats — 371.40 fantasy points
Passing: 3,859 yds., 34 TDs, 8 INTs
Rushing: 561 yds., 11 TDs
4. Zac Robinson, Oklahoma State (SR) — Bye Week — 5 — No. 8 overall QB
With Robinson, receiver Dez Bryant and running back Kendall Hunter returning, the Cowboys have one of the top offensive trios in the nation. Robinson watched his rushing yards take a dip last year, but he made up for that loss with improvement in the passing game. Last year, he attempted less passes than he did in 2007, but tossed 240 more yards, two touchdowns and completed a career high 65 percent of his passes. The Cowboys have a shot to make a run at a BCS bowl game if they can find a way to knock off Texas or Oklahoma and keeping Robinson healthy will be a key factor in the Big 12 South race. Don’t be surprised if the senior doesn’t improve much on his rushing yards, but expect continued improvement as a passer. A solid QB1 in all league formats.
2008 stats — 284.20 fantasy points
Passing: 3,064 yds., 25 TDs, 10 INTs
Rushing: 562 yds., 8 TDs
5. Robert Griffin, Baylor (SO) — Bye Week — 2 — No. 9 overall QB
Griffin came to Waco as a highly-touted recruit and didn’t disappoint. In 11 starts, he displayed enormous poise, throwing only three interceptions and posting six games of at least three touchdowns. With another season to work with coach Art Briles, expect Griffin to only get better. Considering Griffin is only a sophomore, there may be a few bumps in the road, but there is a high fantasy ceiling for this year and the next couple of seasons. The Bears also have an emerging cast of weapons, including sophomore receiver Kendall Wright and running back Jay Finley. With Griffin at the helm, the Bears have a shot to make their first bowl game since 1994 and the sophomore should be one of the first 10 to 12 passers off the board. Considering he's only a sophomore and may struggle against Oklahoma or Texas, be sure to draft a dependable backup.
2008 stats — 304.28 fantasy points
Passing: 2,091 yds., 15 TDs., 3 INTs
Rushing: 843 yds., 13 TDs
6. Todd Reesing, Kansas (SR) — Bye Week — 5 — No. 11 overall QB
The Big 12 North title has eluded the Jayhawks, but this might be the year they finally break through. Reesing ranks fifth among all active passers in the NCAA with 68 touchdown passes and owns several school passing records. With one of the Big 12’s top receiving corps returning, expect another huge season from Reesing. Last year, he posted only four performances of less than two touchdowns and closed out the season with back-to-back games for 300 yards and four scores. There’s no shortage of offensive firepower in Lawrence and Reesing should be a safe pick as a QB1 or high QB2 in 120 leagues.
2008 stats — 276.68 fantasy points
Passing: 3,888 yds., 32 TDs, 13 INTs
Rushing: 224 yds., 4 TDs
7. Austen Arnaud, Iowa State (JR) — Bye Week — 13 — No. 33 overall QB
Arnaud is one of this year’s top sleepers at quarterback. Although the Cyclones could struggle to have a winning record, expect the offense to score plenty of points. New coordinator Tom Herman comes over from Rice, after coordinating an offense that averaged over 40 points and 470 yards per game last season. It took half a season for the Owls to pickup his offense in 2007, but eventually became one of the most prolific in college football. Although it may take a little time to get going, Arnaud should easily surpass his numbers from last year. Consider Arnaud a solid QB3 in 2009, with potential to be an every week fantasy starter in 2010.
2008 stats — 225.58 fantasy points
Passing: 2,792 yds., 15 TDs, 10 INTs
Rushing: 401 yds., 5 TDs
8. Jerrod Johnson, Texas A&M (JR) — Bye Week — 2 — No. 37 overall QB
Johnson flashed potential last season, throwing 11 touchdowns and averaging 325 yards through the air during a five game, midseason stretch. However, he closed out the year with six interceptions in his final three games and only registered three touchdown tosses. Although Ryan Tannehill may make a push for the job in the fall, Johnson no longer has to look over his shoulder for a possible benching to Stephen McGee. The Aggies have some emerging talent around Johnson, including freshman running back Christine Michael and wide receiver Jeff Fuller. If Johnson can put everything together, he could emerge as a low QB2 or solid QB3. Even if he struggles during select Big 12 matchups, non-conference games against Utah State, New Mexico and UAB should be especially favorable.
2008 stats — 204.40 fantasy points
Passing: 2,435 yds., 21 TDs, 10 INTs
Rushing: 114 yds., 3 TDs
9. Blaine Gabbert, Missouri (SO) — Bye Week — 5 — No. 39 overall QB
There is a massive rebuilding project underway in Columbia. Gone is quarterback Chase Daniel, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, tight end Chase Coffman and coordinator Dave Christensen. Gabbert was highly-regarded out of high school, ranking No. 32 in the 2008 Athlon Consensus 100, but he will have some big shoes to fill this year. The sophomore attempted 13 passes last year, but eight of those came against SEMO. Considering the fantasy track record of recent Tiger quarterbacks, Gabbert is worth a look as a QB3 or QB4 in 120 leagues. However, he will have a few ups and downs in his first season as a starter, but should be a good option in select matchups and excellent value in keeper leagues.
2008 stats — 3.92 fantasy points
Passing: 43 yds., 0 TD
Rushing: 22 yds., 0 TD
10. Cody Hawkins, Colorado (JR) — Bye Week — 4 — No. 75 overall QBHawkins took a lot of criticism for his play last season and there is no guarantee he will begin the year No. 1 on the depth chart. Sophomore Tyler Hansen saw some playing time last year and is expected to make a push in the fall for the job. Whichever quarterback wins the job will have a thin receiving corps catching passes, but should play behind a solid offensive line and running attack. Hawkins has some potential, but isn’t worth a pick unless he secures the job and is able to push his passing yards and touchdowns a little higher.
2008 stats — 151.98 fantasy points
Passing: 1,892 yds., 17 TDs, 10 INTs
Rushing: -23 yds., 3 TDs
11. Carson Coffman, Kansas State (JR) — Bye Week — 13
All Coffman has to do is replace Kansas State’s career leader in passing yards, total offense and passing touchdowns. Not difficult at all right? Coffman dazzled in the spring game, throwing for 334 yards and three touchdowns. However, the junior has only 46 actual game attempts, so there will be some adjustment period this year. The Wildcats have some favorable matchups – Massachusetts, UL Lafayette, Tennessee Tech and Iowa State – and return Brandon Banks at receiver, but Coffman is still a shaky fantasy option. Junior college transfer Daniel Thomas will get a look in the fall, but expect Coffman to begin the year as the No. 1 quarterback.
2008 stats — 24.08 fantasy points
Passing: 282 yds., 1 TD, 2 INTs
Rushing: 60 yds., 1 TD
12. Zac Lee, Nebraska (JR) — Bye Week — 5
With a strong offensive line and running game, don’t expect the Huskers to ask too much from their quarterback this year. Lee has played in only two games, attempted two passes and rushed for 17 yards. Although the Huskers like Lee’s potential, especially with his ability to beat teams on the ground and through the air, he is still an unknown commodity. All signs point to Lee taking the first snap of the season, but freshman Cody Green or converted linebacker Latravis Washington could get a look if the offense sputters.
2008 stats — 1.9 fantasy points
Passing: 5 yds., 0 TD
Rushing: 17 yds., 0 TD
