Boise State (10-0, 6-0 WAC) at Nevada (6-4, 4-2 WAC)
Saturday, Nov. 22, 1 p.m. PT
Mackay Stadium, Reno, Nev.

The WAC’s best offense and best defense clash in a rematch of last year’s four-overtime thriller — a 69-67 Boise State win.

Nevada brings the offense. The Wolf Pack lead the nation in rushing (325 yards per game) and the WAC in scoring (38.5 points per game) and total offense (524.2 yards per game). They put the WAC’s top two rushers in the same backfield — quarterback Colin Kaepernick (8.3 yards per carry, 101.7 yards per game, 16 TDs) and running back Vai Taua (7.3 yards per carry, 128.4 yards per game, 14 TDs).

Boise State brings the defense. The Broncos rank second in the nation in scoring defense (10.3 points per game) and lead the WAC in total defense (285.5 yards per game). They have only allowed one team (Oregon) to score more than 14 offensive points. They lead the WAC with 29 takeaways and 31 sacks.

And the other side of the matchup should be interesting, too. Nevada’s run defense has been dominant (it ranks second in the nation) and the Pack have two standout defensive ends who will give the Broncos’ young offensive line a test. The Broncos have mixed the run and pass well, so this could be a chance for freshman quarterback Kellen Moore to shine. Moore is 11th in the nation in pass efficiency (20 TDs, six interceptions).

Both offenses are likely to move the ball. The difference should be turnovers and third-down efficiency — two areas in which the Broncos have a decided edge. Boise State is plus-10 in turnover margin; Nevada is minus-2. Boise State converts 42.9 percent of its third downs; Nevada converts 40.6.

Notes:

Boise State wrapped up a WAC title or an undefeated regular season against Nevada in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. The Broncos can clinch the outright WAC title with a win.

Boise State is 7-0 against Nevada in WAC play. Before last year, the Broncos had outscored the Pack 294-59 in those games.

Nevada has a chance to become the third team in FBS history to average 300 rushing yards and 200 passing yards per game.

Boise State safety Ellis Powers has returned a fumble for a touchdown in two straight games. Cornerback Kyle Wilson has returned a punt for a touchdown in two of the past three games.

A sellout crowd of about 30,000 is expected — double what the Pack drew for their other WAC home games.

Key Player (Broncos) — Jeron Johnson, S

The Broncos are 16-0 the past two seasons when Johnson starts, and 4-3 when he doesn’t. He didn’t play last year against Nevada and the Broncos missed his physical presence. He leads the team with 66 tackles and has added two interceptions, six pass breakups and three fumble recoveries.

Key Player (Wolf Pack) — Colin Kaepernick, QB

At some point, the Broncos are going to make Kaepernick beat them with his arm — and that is his weakness. He has completed 57.8 percent of his passes, which ranks fifth in the WAC. However, he does have 14 touchdown passes against a WAC-low four interceptions.
