Week 2: Central Michigan at Georgia
Saturday, Sept. 6, 3:30 p.m. ET
Sanford Stadium, Athens, Ga.
After Saturday’s match-up against Central Michigan, the schedule gets a little tougher for Georgia. Back-to-back road dates against South Carolina and Arizona State await, along with matchups against Alabama, LSU and Tennessee before the month of October is finished.
The Bulldogs can’t over look the Chippewas, especially with the offensive talent this team has. Quarterback Dan LeFevour won’t make life easy on the defense, especially with his mobility. The junior also boasts two solid options at receiver in Antonio Brown and Bryan Anderson. The Chippewas have a couple of steady players at running back, but want to move the ball through the air. The key for a Chippewa upset will be turnovers. LeFevour can’t make mistakes that will put his defense in a bad position early on.
In last week’s blowout victory against Georgia Southern, Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford passed for 275 yards and two touchdowns. In addition to his impressive performance, running backs Knowshon Moreno and Caleb King had a solid day against the overmatched Eagle defense. Although the Bulldogs have a young offensive line, they should be able to push the Chippewas around up front. The Chippewas struggled to stop opposing teams last year, and their defense will have to come up with a couple of key stops or turnovers to have any chance at victory.
Notes:
Georgia defensive tackle Jeff Owens will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL in last week’s victory against Georgia Southern.
Bulldogs running back Knowshon Moreno suffered through leg cramps against Georgia Southern, but won’t be limited in Saturday’s game.
This will be the first meeting between these two schools.
Key Player (Chippewas) – Dan LeFevour, QB
It’s not going to be easy pulling the upset in Athens, but LeFevour has the ability to give the Bulldog defense some trouble. The dual-threat collected 46 total touchdowns, 3,652 passing yards and over 1,000 yards on the ground last year. It’s a tall task for the Chippewas, but LeFevour is capable of putting scoring drives together.
Key Player (Bulldogs) – A.J. Green, WR
Stafford and Moreno are the stars for this offense, but this freshman receiver had a solid performance in the season opener. Green caught two passes for 40 yards and a touchdown, and has the talent to emerge as the go-to guy for his quarterback. The Bulldogs should be able to work on their passing game against the Chippewas, which is especially important when you consider their upcoming slate.
