2008 Heisman Watch: Noel Devine

It’s the most prestigious individual award in all of sports, and Athlon's Heisman Watch spotlights the top 25 candidates to hoist the trophy. West Virginia running back Noel Devine is next on the 2008 list, which will be released in no particular order.

Noel Devine was among the top 25 incoming freshmen recruits last season and despite his lack of playing time, the West Virginia faithful had high expectations. Throughout Devine’s high school career, several of his highlight videos from North Fort Myers High School found their way onto the web and the youngster dazzled with his on the field moves and open-field speed.

Despite having the likes of quarterback Pat White and ball carriers Steve Slaton and Owen Schmitt returning in 2007, the Mountaineer coaching staff found ways to get Devine the ball. In the season opener against Western Michigan, the 5-foot-8 back rushed for 44 yards on seven carries and notched his first collegiate touchdown. Devine followed that performance with 76 yards and two touchdowns in a 48-23 victory over Marshall.

Although Slaton was a solid back for the Mountaineers, Devine has the potential to add even more big play ability to the backfield. In the 48-28 Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma, Devine notched a 65-yard rushing touchdown and posted a 76-yard scamper against Maryland. He led the team with 27 plays of 20 yards or more and averaged an impressive 8.6 yards per carry.

In addition to his success on the ground, Devine added seven receptions for 90 yards and averaged 23.2 yards per return on kickoffs. Although the Mountaineers need to keep him healthy, it will be hard to keep Devine away from the kick-return game, which could earn him more opportunities for Heisman highlights.

Why he’ll be holding the hardware: Although you don’t necessarily need highlight reel plays to win the Heisman, Devine should provide plenty of those moments in 2008. The sophomore is an explosive player who has the potential to score on every touch. As his 8.6 yards per carry indicates, Devine is averaging almost a first down per rush, and it’s a safe bet some of those 10-yard runs turn into 50-yard touchdowns.

Why he’ll be left out: Perhaps the biggest knock on Devine’s Heisman hopes is quarterback Pat White. With White one of the expected frontrunners for the Heisman, Devine will be fighting an uphill battle with his teammate for votes in the East. Although you can’t predict injuries, Devine’s size and lack of depth in the Mountaineer backfield could take a toll. If Devine’s frame (5’8”, 170 pounds) takes too much of a beating, his production will suffer.

Final Analysis: The Mountaineers will miss Slaton and Schmitt, but Devine is more than capable of rushing for well over 1,000 yards in 2008. Look for the sophomore to shine in his first season as the go-to guy in the Mountaineer backfield. However, his best chance at winning the Heisman may be in 2009. With White having one more year of eligibility, Devine will have the entire offensive spotlight next season and should begin as another top 25 candidate.
