2008 HEISMAN WATCH

Athlon's Top Five Candidates To Win The Heisman Trophy

Comments

#1 - Sam Bradford

QB

Oklahoma

Has thrown for 4,000 yards and 46 touchdowns. Sending his team to the national championship certainly can't hurt.

#2 - Colt McCoy

QB

Texas

No player is more valuable to his team. Has accounted for at least 269 yards in every game this season and set new NCAA record with 77.6 percent completion rate.

#3 - Tim Tebow

QB

Florida

A touchdown machine. Numbers pale in comparison to last year, however, which could keep him away from back-to-back trophies.

#4 - Shonn Greene

RB

Iowa

The only player to rush for 100 yards in every game this season, Greene was the surprise of the Big Ten. Ended with 1,729 rush yards and 17 TDs on a 6.2 YPC average.

#5 - Graham Harrell

QB

Texas Tech

Stats look good, but OU game sealed his fate as an also-ran. Still leads nation with 4,689 pass yards, reaching the 400-mark six times.

i can tell you right now that the big twelve's defense can almost match up to the sec defense's because it is outstanding offenses that make the big twelve D's look bad on paper, if the same offenses played in the sec the sec defenses would look even worse because other than florida there is not O in the sec, so you are wrong

TO THE SOONER FAN. SAM BRADFORD'S CANDIDACY FOR THE HEISMAN IS NOT CONTINGENT ON WHETHER OR NOT OKLAHOMA IS THE BEST TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. THE HEISMAN IS AN INDIVIDUAL AWARD GIVEN TO THE BEST PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY. ALTHOUGH A TEAM'S SUCCESS DOES TEND TO SWAY THE VOTING, IT IS VERY POSSIBLE TO BE THE BEST PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY AND NOT BE ON THE BSET TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. YOUR ARGUMENT IS RIDICULOUS.

Who gives a crap about stats? Statistics are only a part the indicator of an athlete's abilities and contributions to his team. Every QB I can remember at Tech during Leach's tenure has put up insane numbers. It is true that Harrell's are some of the best, but, as evidenced by the numbers his team put up on the ground and the number of sacks Tech allowed, this was likely their best line ever. Harrell plays in a system in which big numbers are the norm, has a great line, and the nation's best receiver. He also played two games against FCS (div. 1-AA schools). Bradford is a great passer, but has a powerful line, two legitimate star running backs and four receivers and a tight end that are star caliber. Harrell's and Bradford's team defenses are also porous, which keeps them on the field throwing the ball around. Tebow's team is all about defense. He is a great player, but has not been asked to do as much this year. His team has picked off 23 passes, and his line is ridiculous in a currently weak conference (take a look at the ypg stats Florida's RBs have). Shonn Green and Colt McCoy have been asked to do far more than any of the other three players. McCoy lost his only receiving tight end two games into the season, and was two deep at WR. His other receivers were freshmen who took the length of the season to develop....and still didn't catch many balls. Texas' line is not dominant, and they do not have a single star caliber running back. McCoy put up his numbers behind an average line, using a couple of sure handed, but not spectacular receivers and one back catching passes out of the backfield. He was sacked and hit far more often than the other contenders, and still managed to lead his team in rushing as well, posting ten td carries. Shonn Greene was Iowa's ONLY weapon. Everyone knew he was getting the ball, and that Iowa had no other real option. He still put up more that 100 yards in every game and led Div !-A in rushing. Greene and McCoy mean more to their team's successes, and put up numbers against much greater odds and with far fewer weapons than the other contenders. They are all great players, but Greene and McCoy played well under much greater duress.

Graham Harrell should not be heisman. no QB from the big 12 should, b/c there is no D at all in the big 12. the only team that plays D is OK and you seen what happend there. if the big 12 plays D why is there 4 QB's that pass for 400 yards a game. they wouldnt be able to do that if they played D

Graham Harrell should still be on top of the heisman list. He had one game where is teams defense played horrible, and tebow won it when his team went 9-4. Harrell has the best stats in all of college football.
