2007 Heisman Watch: Percy Harvin
It’s the most prestigious individual award in all of sports, and this year, there’s no shortage of candidates. Florida wide receiver/running back Percy Harvin is next up in Athlon's 2007 Heisman Watch, which will be released in no particular order.
The 2006 SEC Freshman of the Year and SEC Championship Game MVP already has plenty of experience when it comes to winning major awards. Now, the 19-year-old sophomore must adjust to being the Gators’ go-to guy for an entire season.
Last year, Harvin and fellow true freshman sensation quarterback Tim Tebow were electrifying sparks off the Florida bench — used to perfection by coach Urban Meyer in the spread option attack. As a wide receiver, Harvin had 34 catches for 427 yards, on 12.6 yards per catch, and two touchdowns. As a running back, he had 41 carries for 428 yards, on 10.4 yards per carry, and three trips to the end zone. During his first year in Gainesville, Harvin had 75 touches for 855 total yards and five touchdowns, while averaging an 11.4-yard gain every time he had his hands on the football.
Even more impressive, Harvin had four of his five scores over the final three games of the season — at Florida State, vs. Arkansas at the SEC Championship Game and vs. No. 1-ranked Ohio State at the BCS National Championship Game. In the Gators’ most important three games of the season, Harvin had 14 catches for 122 yards and one score, while running 15 times for 213 yards and three touchdowns on the ground — or, 29 touches for 315 total yards and four end zone celebrations.
It was no coincidence that Harvin hit his stride as the Gators began to emerge as legitimate national title threats. Harvin possesses the type of rare versatility and freakish athleticism that opposing defenses must account for. And this season, defensive coordinators in the SEC, and around the country, will lose sleep game planning for a heavy dose of Harvin.
Why he’ll be holding the hardware: Against Florida State last year, Harvin showed flashes of a future Heisman Trophy winner — rushing for 86 yards on just four first-half carries, including a 41-yard touchdown romp after lining up as a shotgun quarterback. It’s that kind of versatility that’s going to get Harvin noticed. If Florida makes it to a second consecutive national championship game and Harvin continues his unbelievable rate of big plays in big games, who knows what could happen?
Why he’ll be left out: Even USC’s Reggie Bush – the player with whom Harvin is most often compared — had to wait until his junior year before being winning the Heisman Trophy. In fact, no player has ever been honored with the “most prestigious award in college football” following his sophomore season. Nearly everything has to fall into place for Harvin to win.
Final analysis: Harvin will continue to show off his football moves and track star speed, while adding to his highlight tape and gridiron resume. But, the sophomore superstar will have to wait until 2008 to strike his Heisman pose.
