No. 1: USC

How in the world does Pete Carroll continue to keep his team so stacked with talent year after year? How can the seven Parade All-America running backs at USC all believe they’re going to be the next star at Tailback U.? Why does quarterback Mark Sanchez, the 2004 Parade All-America Player of the Year, sit on the bench behind Matt Leinart and John David Booty — for three years? It’s the same story at just about every position on the team. If the Trojans lose a game this year, it’ll be their own fault.

With 15 starters back from last season, including 10 on defense, along with most of the top backups and another stellar recruiting class (they didn’t have a lot of scholarships to give this year, but the quality they reaped is ridiculously good), Carroll’s crew should roll from Sept. 1 through Dec. 1 and beyond.

Booty completed 62 percent of his passes for 3,347 yards and 29 touchdowns in his first year as a starter. He enters 2007 as a top Heisman contender, with Sanchez knocking on the door. The tailback position is an embarrassment of riches, with three players returning who started games last year: C.J. Gable, Emmanuel Moody and Chauncey Washington. Gable was the first true freshman tailback ever to start a season opener for the Trojans. Allen Bradford, Stafon Johnson and a trio of the most coveted recruits in the nation are all standing in line. Though Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith are gone, don’t make the mistake of overlooking USC’s receiving corps. Patrick Turner, Vidal Hazelton and David Ausberry (and, if spring games are any indication, Travon Patterson) will be household names before season’s end.

The offensive line is two-deep in top-notch performers, with three returning starters, led by two-time All-America tackle Sam Baker. Another All-American, nose tackle Sedrick Ellis, leads three returning starters on the defensive line. Keith Rivers, Rey Maualuga and Brian Cushing comprise the first line of the best and deepest linebacker corps in America. Safety Taylor Mays had a major impact as a true freshman, racking up 62 tackles and leading the Trojans with three interceptions, and rejoins the rest of the starting secondary and all of their backups from last year. Among the potential stars of the incoming freshman class are the nation’s top-rated prospects at running back (Joe McKnight), center (Kristofer O’Dowd), defensive end (Everson Griffen), and linebacker (Chris Galippo).

The Trojans will travel to their two toughest out-of-conference contests this year — Nebraska and Notre Dame. The California game on Nov. 10 is also on the road. The home slate doesn’t look particularly challenging until Oregon State comes calling on Nov. 3, then UCLA in the finale.

Notes:
» The Trojans have lost four of their last 60 games — by a total of 12 points.

» USC had no trouble with out of conference foes last year, dispatching SEC West champ Arkansas 50–14, Big 12 North champ Nebraska 28–10, Notre Dame 44–24 and Michigan in the Rose Bowl 32–18. The Trojans stumbled, however, in their own conference, losing to Oregon State 33–31 and UCLA 13–9.

» Pete Carroll’s Trojans are enjoying streaks of five consecutive AP top 4 finishes, five consecutive 11-win seasons, five consecutive Pac-10 titles, and five consecutive BCS Bowl appearances.

Since my diplomas (at least two of them) are from the University of Southern California, my opinion is biased ...

Taking an accounting of the talent that moved from the USC Football Program onto the next level (NFL) over the last 20 or so years and the longevity of USC players in the NFL ..... I would say the talent of Pete Carroll and those USC players speak loudly based on the results...

Yes, we may lose one game in 2007 (but, I would not count on it-vegas would not take a parlay bet in April from me) but the bar remains high and another BCS game for the Cardinal and Gold is an absolute. So all of you Trojan haters out there, get a comfortable seat and get used to it for the next two+ years....minimum..... maybe more ....

I'm biased because I'm a Trojan. But come on now! SC is on an incredible run the past few years. Everybody wants to knock the Pac 10 and downplay the Trojans, but facts are facts and SC can play with anybody in the Country, period! They've proved for the past five years and will continue to do so. Besides Texas, I dont recall anouther non-conference loss in quite some time. They've pretty much dominated all their non conference foes. Their last six losses TOTALED 12 points and were decided in the last few plays or in OT! When was the last time you've seen a Trojan team get "dominated" or "blown out"? Hasnt happened in the last five years has it? Not trying to sound like a jerk, but for those of you who dont have respect for the Trojans...How has your school done in the past five years? Historically... How many Nat Championships do you have? How many Hesiman Trophy winners? How many NFL standouts,Hall of Famers?

SB you hit the nail on the head. you could put duke in that confrence and they would have alot better record.

Without a doubt USC will dominate the PAC-10 AGAIN.It's the only conference in college football that has one viable contender and nine conference fillers.

Usc will not only win the pac-10 and win the national championship they will dominate along the way

you guys are setting yourselves up for dissapointment.USC is a great team but the last two years even with all the money that gets thrown at thier players(reggie bush)they still can't finish 1st.Must be caused by some guilt complex from being bribed or bribing.two teams with close to .500 w/l records at the time of facing them beat em. I know ,I was in corvallis,Great Game.they'll finish in the top ten ,not because they got heart ,not because they play as a team, but because they recruited the best class.the reason they will lose one or two games is somthin i call the dream team complex.Imagine if we sent the Detroit Pistons to the olyimpics instead of the embarassment we did send? They wouldn't have lost a game and we'd be sittin on gold. Why because they are a team because thier actions compliment eacother instead of just themselves.Everybody on the team is tryin to prove they should be starters and they will try it at the expence of the game just like reggie bush did with his little latteral he tried against Texas. They are gonna be so centered on themselves they won't care about the other 10 guys on thhe field. So sure USC doesn't have a single weakness ...unless you count pride.

I am a fan of the Trojans, so my input could be seen as biased. So let's just stick to the facts...USC has not lost a HOME game (at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum) since 2003, that is 33 in a row to be exact. This is a feat only shared currently with the Blue Turf Broncos of Boise State. OSU might have been overrated (they did sit Texas down early in the season though) or maybe give credit where credit was due as Florida rose to the calling. If OSU was that bad the line at Vegas would have been much closer, Billionaire;-) USC has three radar games Nebraska, Cal, UCLA. The first test is conveniently scheduled after bye weeks and UCLA....cross town rival and the effects from last years game? Let me personally guarantee you that Pete will have them ready, as he and Coach Dorell respectfully dislike each other. Cal at cal, after the Oregon State pay back game, I see as the season's make or break game. Making personal attacks are just foolish, let's just see who comes out on top in January...Fight on!

Here is a team that lost a home game to end the season with a shot at the National Title, granted they came back to win the Rose Bowlover Michigan, and we remember how Ohio State showed how tough the Big 10 was. USC will drop games to Cal, UCLA and maybe even Nebraska, tough to be No 1 with three loses. And now that they can no longer pay players like Reggie Bush, I expect to see transfers galore.

Baring something unforeseen happening, Pete Carroll is on the way to becoming the best college coach ever. He certainly has dominated the last 5 years. Of course he`s had some luck, Charlie Weiss has been the Notre Dame coach.
