Although preseason rankings and drafts are still a couple of months away, here’s a rough, early look at how the top of the quarterback cheatsheet may look.
1. Case Keenum, Houston
Despite losing offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, don’t expect the Houston offense to change the gameplan. With Conference USA’s best receiving corps returning, Keenum will once again top the quarterback rankings and should be the top overall pick in 2010 drafts.
2. Colin Kaepernick, Nevada
Kaepernick’s passing yards dropped from 2,849 in 2008 to 2,052 last season, but still finished as the No. 3 fantasy quarterback. Expect an increase in passing yards next year and another 1,000-yard season on the ground.
3. Dwight Dasher, Middle Tennessee
Dasher closed out the 2009 season in style, rushing for 201 yards and two scores against Southern Miss in the New Orleans Bowl. The return of head coach Rick Stockstill and offensive coordinator Tony Franklin was huge in keeping Dasher’s fantasy value in the top five.
4. Jerrod Johnson, Texas A&M
Johnson narrowly missed making the final top five for fantasy quarterbacks last season, but he appears primed for an even better 2010 campaign. The Aggies have a loaded receiving corps, but Johnson may be asked to run less with the improvement of running backs Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael.
5. Kellen Moore, Boise State
There’s little to suggest a drop in statistics for Moore next season. The Broncos are solid up front and the receiving corps is deep, led by Titus Young and Austin Pettis. The season opener against Virginia Tech likely won’t generate any fantasy value, but Moore should be an every week starter the rest of the year.
Other top options returning at quarterback
Diondre Borel, Utah State -- Aggies could surprise in WAC race this year and Borel should have his best statistical season in all categories.
Zach Collaros, Cincinnati -- How much does the loss of coach Brian Kelly hurt this offense?
Dayne Crist, Notre Dame -- Rehabbing from a torn ACL, but returns receiver Michael Floyd and new coach Brian Kelly will implement a high-scoring offense.
Austin Dantin, Toledo -- Aaron Opelt showed the Toledo offense can generate plenty of fantasy value from the quarterback spot, and Dantin appears to be the starter in 2010.
Austin Davis, Southern Miss -- Missed most of the season with a foot injury, but should return 100 percent and benefits from a healthy DeAndre Brown in 2010.
Ricky Dobbs, Navy -- Can he repeat 27 rushing touchdowns?
Blaine Gabbert, Missouri -- Loses receiver Danario Alexander, but Tigers have some talented players waiting in the wings.
Robert Griffin, Baylor -- Recovery from torn ACL on schedule and should be a top 15-20 fantasy quarterback.
Jamie Hampton, Troy -- Offensive coordinator Neal Brown is gone, but the Trojans will continue to have one of the more prolific offenses in the Sun Belt.
Landry Jones, Oklahoma -- The biggest key to improvement from Jones in 2010 will be establishing more consistency from week-to-week.
G.J. Kinne, Tulsa -- Losing Gus Malzahn was huge and after a so-so season on offense, coach Todd Graham has hired another no-huddle offensive guru Chad Morris (Lake Travis High School) as co-offensive coordinator.
Jake Locker, Washington -- Unlikely to equal rushing yards from freshman season (986), but should have best statistical passing season in 2010.
Ryan Mallett, Arkansas -- Ended 2009 as the No. 18 fantasy quarterback and with the top receiving corps returning in the SEC, expect Mallett to inch closer to the top 10.
Jeremiah Masoli, Oregon -- Started slow last season, but turned it around to become a reliable week-to-week option.
Josh Nesbitt, Georgia Tech -- Running back Jonathan Dwyer is gone, but Paul Johnson’s offense will continue to click.
Kyle Padron, SMU -- With running back Shawnbrey McNeal moving onto the NFL, expect the Mustangs to lean more on the pass.
Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State -- Steady improvement, is 2010 the monster statistical season?
Russell Wilson, NC State -- Won’t play spring football due to baseball, but expected to return in the fall.
