Another year, another similar result – a Conference USA quarterback finished atop the fantasy ranks.

Houston’s Case Keenum was our preseason No. 1 fantasy quarterback and the junior came close, finishing No. 2 to UAB’s Joseph Webb. Webb totaled 3,738 total yards and 33 scores this season, edging Keenum by eight points for the top spot. Rounding out the top five are Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick, Central Michigan’s Dan LeFevour and MTSU’s Dwight Dasher.

Some of this year’s biggest disappointments? Illinois’ Juice Williams, Oklahoma State’s Zac Robinson and UTEP’s Trevor Vittatoe.

Surprises? Purdue’s Joey Elliott, Tennessee’s Jonathan Crompton and TCU’s Andy Dalton.

Injuries claimed some key quarterbacks during the year, including Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, Baylor’s Robert Griffin, Southern Miss’ Austin Davis and Hawaii’s Greg Alexander. Bradford and Alexander won’t return next season, but if Griffin and Davis are healthy, they should be among the first 20 quarterbacks drafted.

Looking ahead to 2010

A couple of quarterback battles to watch

Tulsa – G.J. Kinne vs. Jacob Bower vs. Shavodrick Beaver
Don’t expect the Golden Hurricane to rekindle the offensive numbers witnessed under Gus Malzahn, but the starting quarterback still has top-25 fantasy value.

Texas Tech – Taylor Potts vs. Steven Sheffield vs. Scotty Young vs. Jacob Karam
Potts started off the year by throwing 13 touchdowns in the first four games, but suffered an injury against New Mexico and lost the job to Steven Sheffield. The winner of this quarterback battle should be drafted in the first round next season.

Oklahoma State – Brandon Weeden vs. Alex Cate vs. Clint Chelf
When Zac Robinson was forced to miss the Colorado game due to injuries, Cate started, but was replaced by Weeden in the second half. Weeden responded by throwing for 168 yards and two scores. Going into spring practice, the job has to be Weeden’s to lose.

Central Michigan – Ryan Radcliff vs. Derek Rifenbury vs. A.J. Westendorp
Replacing Dan LeFevour isn’t going to be easy and it’s likely the winner of this battle won’t have top 10-15 fantasy value. However, the hiring of a new coach and LeFevour’s success over the last four seasons makes this situation one to watch.

Transfers to watch

Phillip Bates, Ohio
Wesley Carroll, Florida International
Taylor Cook, Rice
Chris Harper, Kansas State
Robert Marve, Purdue
