A moment of silence for the end of the college fantasy football season.
Rodgers vs. Gerhart
Toby Gerhart has firmly planted himself in the middle of the Heisman race. And rightly so. His power running style has led the Stanford Cardinal to eight wins and a likely Emerald Bowl bid just down the street. He has the stats — 311 carries for 1,736 yards and 26 rushing touchdowns — and the play — an 18-yard touchdown pass with nine minutes to go against Notre Dame to tie the game — needed to earn a trip to New York.
What I do not understand is why his Pac-10 counterpart, Jacquizz Rodgers, is not receiving the same Heisman interest. Rodgers has gained 1,313 yards and has scored 19 rushing touchdowns with one very big game remaining on the schedule. True, both rushing statistics will likely be less than Gerhart's but Rodgers' impact in the passing game is substantial. The little running back has caught 57 more passes (67 to 10) than Gerhart for 287 more yards (436 to 149). They actually have both thrown a touchdown pass as well this season.
In addition, Quizz vastly out-performed Gerhart in the head-to-head battle. In Oregon State's 38-28 win over Stanford, Rodgers posted his best rushing game of the season with 189 yards and four touchdowns while adding five catches for 82 more yards. That loss to the Beavers was actually the last time Gerhart failed to reach 100 yards rushing (albeit while scoring two touchdowns).
Last but not least, Rodgers and his Beavers will be playing for a trip to the Rose Bowl and a Pac-10 championship this Thursday night against Oregon. Should Quizz play well in the biggest game in Oregon State's recent history, it would be an absolute travesty if he is left out of the Heisman ceremony in Times Square.
At the moment, Gerhart is fantasy's No. 1 running back for the season (358.22 pts) but Rodgers (333.36 pts), with a 25 or more-point-performance, would actually take the crown atop the running back big board. Too bad the season ends in Week 13.
