Week 11 Waiver Wire Report

AC100 Super Sophs Strike

An opportunity to pump up Athlon's own recruiting rankings has never gone by the wayside and the Boxscore will not start now. The Athlon Consensus 100 — the truest compilation and ranking of the top-100 high school football prospects in the nation — began in 2008 with a quarterback from Jeannette, Pa.

Ohio State's Terrelle Pryor, in his first full season as the starter, has led his team to a Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl berth. The nation's No. 1 recruit has been on a statistical tear since the Purdue loss and was very efficient in the Buckeyes' 27-24 overtime win over Iowa this weekend. He completed 14 of his 17 passes for 93 yards and was asked to handoff 43 times to either Brandon Saine or Daniel Herron. Pryor is a lock to be a first round fantasy pick next season and could be in the conversation with Colin Kaepernick for No. 2 overall behind Case Keenum.

The rest of the of the AC100 quarterbacks from 2008, however, are also making a huge impact. Stanford's Andrew Luck (No. 5 QB, No. 43 overall) is technically a redshirt freshman but has pushed his team into the top-20 in his first full season as the starter. Two weeks ago, the Oregon-USC showdown was supposed to determine the Pac-10 champ. Now, after Stanford dominated both, it's the Cardinal who could be Pasadena bound (although, they will need a little help).

Luck threw for a modest 144 yards and two scores but had no interceptions. He is the Pac-10's most efficient quarterback (151.84) and has compiled a 13:3 touchdown-interception ratio in his first 10 starts of his career. He should finish the season around 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns — a phenomenal start to a career. Of course, it helps when you have the conference's leading rusher too. Luck will lose Toby Gerhart after this season, but after three straight solid recruiting classes full of skill guys, he should be poised for fantasy stardom next season.

Florida State has not had much to be excited about this season but quarterback seems to be one of those things. Christian Ponder was having an excellent season for the Noles until he was lost for the year due to an injury. Former AC100 prospect E.J. Manuel (No. 3 QB, No. 21 overall) got his first career start and led his team to a 41-28 win on the road against Wake Forest. Manuel completed 15 of his 20 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown. He added 45 yards rushing and another score on the ground. Ponder should be back next season but Manuel proved that the cupboard is anything but bare. Manuel's fantasy worth is uncertain next season but is a big-time keeper option.

Missouri has posted three straight 30-plus point efforts and Blaine Gabbert has been much of the reason. He has thrown for 958 yards over that span with seven touchdown passes. Against Big 12 North leader Kansas State this weekend, Gabbert (No. 4 QB, No. 32 overall) completed 20 of his 27 attempts for 298 yards and three scores. He added 35 yards rushing and didn't turn the ball over. In his first season as the starter, Gabbert has posted a 2,662-20-7 line so far. He could end up as the most physically gifted quarterback to ever play at Missouri — and this is a place Brad Smith called home. Gabbert could be working his way into the first round of fantasy drafts for next season.

Lastly, Oklahoma might have a first-round fantasy quarterback for 2010 as well. Landry Jones — fresh off a miserable performance against Nebraska — posted a massive 392-yard, five touchdown game in the 65-10 win over Texas A&M. Jones (No. 7 QB, No. 100 overall) has four, five and six touchdown games in his brief six start career. He has 18 touchdowns in those six games. This offense could return largely intact and the keys appear to be Jones' to lose for next fall. This puts him near the first round of any fantasy draft.

The two other AC100 passers from that class are Notre Dame's Dayne Crist (No. 2 QB, No. 20 overall) and NC State's Mike Glennon (No. 6 QB, No. 50 overall). Crist is poised to take over for Jimmy Clausen should he leave early for the NFL Draft. He has looked good in spot duty using his legs to make plays but tore up his knee and is out for the rest of the season. Glennon is stuck behind the super talented Russell Wilson at the moment. But recruiting rankings don't matter, right?

Wild Rebel Runs Wild

The Ole Miss Rebels have won four of their last five with much of the credit going to one very dynamic player. Wide receiver/running back/motion back Dexter McCluster came into this season as a top fantasy option at the wideout spot. The speedster scored twice against Memphis for a 26.5 fantasy point game in Week One. The Rebels' coaching staff then proceeded to get him the ball a total of 39 times over the next five games (7.8 touches per game). Ole Miss went 3-2 in those five games.

Over the last three SEC contests, however, No. 22 has become the focal point of the offense in a very big way. McCluster has carried the ball 69 times and caught 15 passes for a total of 787 yards from scrimmage. That equates to 28 touches per game for 262.3 yards per game. He has scored six touchdowns over that span. Against the Vols this weekend, he was simply unstoppable as he zig-zagged his way to four touchdowns and 282 yards rushing. He now leads the nation in rushing attempts by a wide receiver (107).

With LSU and Mississippi State still left on the slate and a potential 10-win season still within reach, fantasy owners can expect more of the same from McCluster. It does raise the question: What were Houston Nutt and the offensive coaches thinking for that five game stretch?

True Triple Threat

This just in: C.J. Spiller is good. The Clemson tailback led his team to a 43-23 win over NC State this weekend and Spiller was all over the field. The star runner posted 97 yards rushing with one score on the ground. He caught three passes for 48 yards and another score. For good measure, Spiller added a touchdown pass from 17 yards out. This gives Spiller six rushing touchdowns, four receiving scores, three kick returns, a punt return and a touchdown pass. Recovering an offensive fumble and scoring while playing defense are the only two other ways he could score! A win this Saturday over Virginia and Spiller will have his team in the ACC Championship Game for the first time in school history.

Using Your Legs

Air Force's Chance Harridge set an NCAA record with 22 rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in 2002. Tim Tebow broke that record with 23 scores in 2007. Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs' scored five rushing touchdowns against Delaware this weekend pushing his total to 22 for the year. Navy is on bye this week and faces Hawaii and Army to finish. It is very likely that Dobbs will break the record and it could have been even better considering Dobbs missed nearly two complete games due to injury. Dobbs now has four 100-yard efforts, three games in which he scored at least four rushing touchdowns and leads the nation in carries by a quarterback with 227 rushing attempts.

Rounding out the top five rushing quarterbacks (in terms of scoring): Josh Nesbitt has 16 rushing touchdowns, Colin Kaepernick has 14, Dan LeFevour has 13 and Tim Tebow has 10.

The Week of the Wideout

It was arguably the strongest weekend for wide receivers in the fantasy world this season. Five of the top-10 performers this weekend played wide receiver. McCluster was tops while Danario Alexander, Austin Pettis, Naaman Roosevelt and Toren Dixon all scored at least 37 fantasy points this weekend. With the exception of McCluster, all of them caught at least three touchdowns. Most are already on a fantasy roster but one unlucky owner might have dropped Dixon, so be sure to check the wire for the Rice receiver.

Freddie Barnes, Keith Smith, Greg Salas, Antonio Brown, Demaris Johnson, LaVon Brazill (Ohio), Antavious Wilson (Marshall), Jordan White (W. Mich.), Kerry Meier and Jeremy Williams all had double digit reception games this weekend. Targets and receptions are the key to any good fantasy wideout so be sure to check reception trends when making waiver wire moves this weekend.

By The Numbers

7,626: Western Michigan running back Brandon West's career all-purpose yards after 183 more this weekend. He passed Memphis tailback DeAngelo Williams' 7,573 to set the NCAA record for career all-purpose yards. He also has the NCAA record for return yards.

23-413-4: Missouri wideout Danario Alexander's stat line over the last two games.

16: Jacory Harris interceptions this season — which leads the nation. Harris has added (-203) rushing yards.

32-3: Boise State passer Kellen Moore's TD-INT ratio this season. He leads the nation in passer efficiency (172.49).

3: 500-yard passing games this season by Case Keenum. There have been four total in all of the NCAA (Tyler Sheehan — 505 yds).

4: Freshmen running backs ranked in the nation's top-10 in yards per game (Bernard Pierce, Dion Lewis, Ryan Williams and LaMichael James).

74: The difference in rushing yards between Ryan Mathews' performance this weekend (32) and his previous worst outing of the season (106 vs. UC Davis in Week One).

804: Rushing yards by UTEP's Donald Buckram over his last four games.

233 to 53: Total points scored and allowed by TCU over its last five games.

11-1: TCU's Andy Dalton's TD-INT ratio over that same span.

10.6: Georgia Tech running back Anthony Allen's yards per carry on 52 attempts this season (550 yds-5 TDs).

106: Rushing yards by Wisconsin tight end Lance Kendricks this season. It leads the nation in rushing yards by a tight end. He's a huge sleeper for next season.
