Week 10 Waiver Wire Report

The Mad Scientist

The Cincinnati Bearcats keep rolling along and it really doesn't matter who plays quarterback. Brian Kelly has proven very quickly that he is an offensive mastermind no matter who is taking snaps. Kelly has the most efficient passing attack in the nation (171.84) and is 6th in yards (324.67 ypg). All of this after losing starting quarterback Tony Pike during the sixth game of the season.

Since entering play 14 quarters ago, Zach Collaros has been nothing short of miraculous. In that time, he has completed 70 of his 89 passes (78.6) for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns against only one interception — which came in the second half of the South Florida game. He has yet to throw an interception as a starter for Kelly. In addition to his remarkable passing efficiency, Collaros has added a new element with his legs. He has rushed for 281 yards over those three and half games with four rushing touchdowns.

Maybe the most important statistic, however, is the 3-0 record Collaros has a starter. He has kept his team in the hunt for the national championship. Just look at what normally happens to teams who lose their starting quarterback (Oklahoma, Baylor, South Florida, Iowa, Southern Miss).

The Bearcats fantasy passing attack is beginning to turn into Texas Tech-lite. Plug and play. It doesn't matter who is taking snaps, they produce big fantasy numbers. In 37 games, six different Kelly-led quarterbacks have combined for 10,329 yards, 89 touchdowns and 33 interceptions on 63 percent passing (806 of 1,274). The 31-6 record at Cincinnati is even more impressive for Kelly when dealing with as many injuries as he has had to deal with at the quarterback position. Here are the total passing numbers for quarterbacks under Kelly:

Name Starts Comp. Att. % Yards TDs INTs
Tony Pike 16 338 543 62.2 4,131 35 17
Ben Mauck 12 235 386 60.8 3,121 31 9
Zach Collaros 3 77 104 74.0 1,231 10 1
Dustin Grutza 3 83 121 68.6 1,045 9 1
Chazz Anderson 2 51 81 63.0 533 2 3
Nick Davila 1 19 35 54.1 214 2 2

In 2007, the Beacats finished 20th in the nation in passing offense (286 ypg) and 8th nationally in passing efficiency (149.38). In 2008, three different starters were used and the Cats still finished 26th in passing offense (253 ypg) and 32nd in passer efficiency (136.26). Now the real question becomes what to do with Pike when he is ready to return in the coming weeks? I have no idea but IN KELLY I TRUST!

Fancy Pants to Spillerific

The Clemson Tigers have won four straight games and are in control of the ACC Atlantic with a 4-2 record in conference. They have games with NC State and Virginia left in ACC play and have the tiebreaker over Boston College. Unless they pull a Clemson-like episode of focus-less football, the Tigers should be in Tampa to face Georgia Tech in a rematch of what was one of the more entertaining games of the year (a 30-27 loss in Atlanta).

The biggest reason they could be heading to the ACC title game has been the quarterback-running back combo of Kyle Parker and C.J. Spiller. Parker should be a big-time sleeper in fantasy leagues next season but as the playoffs begin this season, those two games against NC State and Virginia are starting to look like awfully nice matchups. Parker has, in his last three ACC games, thrown for 700 yards, eight touchdowns and only two interceptions (he also has a rushing touchdown). He proved that he could be the leader Clemson needs in the big road win over Miami in overtime and tossed four touchdowns in this week's big win over Florida State.

While Parker has been good, Spiller has been incredible. Spiller rushed for a career high 165 yards against Florida State while posting a school record 312 all-purpose yards (breaking his own record of 310 set against Miami two weeks ago). The two of them hooked up on a 58-yard reception at the beginning of the second half to put the Tigers up. That was his 20th touchdown of 50 yards or more. Spiller, teamed with wideout Jacoby Ford, also broke an NCAA record for career all-purpose yards by teammates topping the 10,253 yards of Marshall Faulk and Darnay Scott at San Diego State in the early 90s.

Spiller, for his career, has posted 3,074 yards rushing, 15 yards passing, 1,251 yards receiving (on 108 career receptions), 1,827 kick return yards and 550 punt return yards. He has scored 25 times rushing, 10 times receiving, six times on kick returns and once on a punt return. He also threw a touchdown last season.

Big 12 Record Books

The Texas Longhorn attack finally looked like it was supposed to all season. Colt McCoy had his best day as a passer in his long and illustrious career. He finished with 470 yards passing — three shy of Major Applewhite's Texas record 473 yards. Actually, it could have been more. McCoy was taken out of the blowout with 9:13 to go in the game. It was Texas's fifth 400-yard passing effort in school history and McCoy has two of them. It was McCoy's 41st victory as a starter. He is now one win away from tying Georgia's David Greene as college football's all-time winningest quarterback.

Wideout Jordan Shipley got into the record books as well as his 273 receiving yards (11 catches) broke a Longhorn single-game receiving mark. It was Shipley's seventh game in two seasons with double-digit receptions and if it wasn't for Bowling Green's Freddie Barnes' ridiculous 107 catches, he would be leading the nation with 75 receptions. Shipley has played 22 games over the last two seasons and has caught 164 passes in those games for an average of 7.5 receptions per game.

Oklahoma State's Zac Robinson got into the mix as well in what had to have been a very special moment for quarterback and coach. Robinson's 142 passing yards in the 34-8 win over Iowa State pushed his career total to 8,065 yards. In the process, he passed Cowboys' head coach Mike Gundy as Oklahoma State's all-time leading passer. The trip back to Stillwater had to have of been a fun one.

By The Numbers

5: Consecutive games in which UAB's Joe Webb has rushed for at least 100 yards.

5:
Consecutive games in which Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt has rushed for at least two touchdowns.

4/5: Four of Wisconsin's Nick Toon's five catches on Saturday led to first down conversions on third down. He had a career high 123 receiving yards.

13: Different players who caught a pass for Miami. The Canes had 19 completions. No one had more than three.

164: UTEP's Donald Buckram has rushed for at least 164 yards in three straight games (165, 164, 234).

152: Oklahoma State's Kendall Hunter's rushing total for 2009. He led the Big 12 in rushing last season with 1,555 yards. He has played in four games this year.

3: Times Stanford's Toby Gerhart has failed to reach 100 yards rushing in his last 16 games. He posted 223 yards in the upset win over Oregon this weekend.

1,459: Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews is leading the nation in rushing. He has gone over the 100-yard mark in every game thus far and is on pace for 1,945 yards.

6: Total touchdowns allowed this season by the Florida defense.

155: Total penalties called in games in which the Georgia Bulldogs have played. They are the most penalized team in the nation with 85 called against. Their opponents also lead (the most) the SEC with 70 penalties called against.

9: Rushing touchdowns by Nevada's Colin Kaepernick over his last three. He has run for 459 yards over that span.

58: Jacquizz Rodgers' receptions this season after nine more catches this weekend. He would lead 101 different FBS teams in catches. Brother James leads the Beavers with 66.

34 to 17: UConn doubled Cincinnati's second half point total but still came up two points shy (47-45). The Huskies trailed 30-10 at halftime.

36: Number of receptions Bowling Green's Freddie Barnes needs to break Houston's Manny Hazard's NCAA single season record of 142. Barnes has 107 receptions in nine games thus far. His current pace of 11.9 receptions per game puts him exactly on that total.
