You Got Genyk-ed

If you are gonna go out, you might as well go out in style. The final game of the Jeff Genyk era at Eastern Michigan featured offensive numbers never seen before in college football. Well, at least one number: completions. Andy Schmitt completed 58 of his 80 pass attempts. The previous NCAA record was 57, set by Jeremy Moss of Stephen F. Austin earlier this season. The FBS record was 55 (Drew Brees, Rusty LaRue). His 516 yards were also a school record (breaking his own record from last week). He threw five touchdowns and ran one in as well. Not bad: 58-80, 516 yds, 5 TD, 38 rush yds, 1 TD

Not to be outdone, wideout Tyler Jones hauled in 23 of those 58 completions, tying an FBS record previously held by Randy Gatewood of UNLV. The greatest receiver of all-time holds the current NCAA record with 24. Jones finished with 170 receiving yards, however, not a single one of the 23 receptions got him into the end zone.

The Eagles are 3-8 in their last 11 conference games. Two of those three came against the two-time defending MAC champion Central Michigan Chippewas.

(genyk-ed (v): to get massively upset by a heavy underdog in a game that you have no business losing. See La-Monroe v. Alabama 2007)

By Land, Sea and Air
Rice's James Casey set himself apart his season as the nation's top fantasy tight end. But he is also the nation's top running back and the nation's top receiver as well. Casey is currently the highest scoring position player in fantasy football. The top eight performers are quarterbacks but Casey sits at No. 9. Casey and Kentucky's Randall Cobb are the only two players in the nation to have scored at least two rushing, two receiving and two passing touchdowns.

Those who ran, caught and threw a touchdown in '08:

Special teams are important too, however. FIU's T.Y. Hilton is the only player in the nation to have scored five different ways this season.

Scored five ways (top-300):
T.Y. Hilton, FIU (1 rush, 7 rec, 1 pass, 1 kr, 1 pr)

Scored four ways (top-300):
C.J. Spiller, Cemson (7 rush, 3 rec, 1 pass, 1 kr)
Derrick Williams, Penn St (3 rush, 3 rec, 2 pr, 1 kr)
Graig Cooper, Miami (4 rush, 1 rec, 1 pass, 1 pr)

Scored three ways (top-300):
Jeremy Maclin, Missouri (2 rush, 11 rec, 1 kr)
Chris Williams, New Mexico St (9 rec, 1 pr, 1 kr)
Jordan Shipley, Texas (11 rec, 1 kr, 1 pr)
Brandon Banks, Kansas St (1 rush, 9 rec, 1 kr)

James Rodgers, Oregon St (5 rush, 4 rec, 1 kr)
Phillip Tanner, MTSU (13 rush, 1 rec, 1 kr)
Eric Morris, Texas Tech (2 rush, 8 rec, 1 pr)
Damaris Johnson, Tulsa (1 rush, 9 rec, 1 kr)
Jason Chery, La-Mon. (3 rush, 6 rec, 1 kr)
Mike Thomas, Arizona (1 rush, 4 rec, 1 pr)
Phillip Livas, Houston (2 rush, 2 rec, 2 pr)
Chris Garrett, Ohio (5 rush, 2 rec, 1 kr)
Donte Harden, Ohio (2 rush, 2 rec, 1 kr)
Derrick Locke, Kentucky (1 rush, 1 rec, 1 pr)
Brandon Tate, North Carolina (1 rush, 3 rec, 1 pr)
Brandon James, Florida (2 rush, 1 rec, 2 pr)

Shockingly, not one of the nation's top-300 quarterbacks returned a kick or punt this season.

Immovable Object
The Trojan defense is the nation's best. If there was not any doubt prior to this weekend, it has all but gone now.  The Irish did not get a first down until the final play of the third quarter and finished the game with 91 yards of total offense. They have allowed 3 or fewer points in five of their last seven including three shutouts. The Sooners, Horns and Red Raiders are all deserving of playing in the Big 12 title game and even the BCS title game. As is Penn State. But personally, I want to see the nation's top defense go head-to-head with the nation's top offensive player in Tim Tebow. But that is just me.

Unstoppable Force
It won't be USC, however, if Oklahoma takes care of business. And that means the nation's top two offenses. Florida very well may be the best, but the only team with a chance at competing is Oklahoma. They are just as good. The Sooners posted their fourth straight 60 plus point offensive outing Saturday night in the Bedlam Series.  They run the ball better than Florida and they have a player Florida doesn't: Jermaine Gresham. He single-handedly changes the defensive game plan. All eleven members of this offense are likely to be drafted - with at least five earmarked for the first round. The injury to Cornelius Ingram might be the difference - at least until they play in Miami, Fla in just over a month.

OU has scored at least 58 points in five straight games. In addition to the sixty point performances, they have scored 50+ in four other games. That is eight games of 50 or more points.

Teams to have scored 60+ points four times in a season (since 2000):
2008 Oklahoma Sooners
2006 Hawaii Warriors (three in a row)
2005 Texas Longhorns

This season's Oregon Ducks are the only other team to have scored 60 or more in three games in a single season since '00. Also, the Cougars of Washington State show up on this list as well. They have had the good fortune of allowing 60+ this season four times - and two more of 58 and 59 points allowed.

2008 Top Fantasy Performers:

QB - Chase Clement, Rice (433.98 pts - Case Keenum, 401.84)
RB - Javon Ringer, Michigan St (313.50 pts - MiQuale Lewis, 313.30)
WR - Dez Bryant, Oklahoma St (290.30 pts - Austin Collie, 287.50)
TE - James Casey, Rice (315.10 pts - Mark Hafner, 199.70)
K - Louie Sakoda, Utah (122.36 pts - Jeff Wolfert, 120.00)
DEF - Florida / Boston College - 244.00 pts
