Week 8’s Top Fantasy Plays:

1. DeAndre Brown, WR, Southern Miss (52.1 pts)
    12 rec, 221 yds, 4 TD

2. Dennis Kennedy, RB, Akron (49.7 pts)
    25 car, 277 yds, 3 TD, 1 rec, 15 yds, 2 pt conversion

3. Dezmon Briscoe, WR, Kansas (46.2 pts)
    12 rec, 269 yds, 2 TD, 1 car, 13 yds,

The 4 x 200

Brown and Briscoe stole the show for receivers this week but two more guys went for 2-bills as well. Tulsa’s Brennan Marion and Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant each caught over 200 yards this weekend. Marion averaged 39 yards-per-catch (6-233-3) while Bryant (11-212-2) caught all but two of quarterback Zac Robinson’s completions. Briscoe’s 269 yards are the best in the nation this season and the Milk Man’s 233 is No. 3.

It’s a Quarterback League

10 of the top 11 fantasy players are quarterbacks. And that is with each passing touchdown counting as only four points instead of six. Javon Ringer is the only non-quarterback ranked in the top-11 after eight weeks of action. Josh Freeman moved from #1 to #6 after his mediocre performance in the road loss at Colorado. He did, however, add another rushing touchdown. He is now tied for second in the nation with 13 rushing touchdowns. (Ringer – 14)

Not My Better Half

There are a few coaches that would like to forget the first half of Saturday’s contest:

New Mexico 49, San Diego State 0. Final Score: 70-7.
The Cortes style drubbing of the Aztecs meant huge numbers for Rodney Ferguson. The nation’s worst run defense might have actually gotten worse as Ferguson rumbled for 84 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone. He finished with 149 yards and four scores.

USC 41, Washington State 0. Final Score: 69-0.
Mark Sanchez threw five first half touchdowns (which is as many passes WSU’s Kevin Lopina completed in the first half) as the Trojans saw little resistance from the Cougars defense. A David Buehler blocked PAT was about the only thing to go well for Wassu in the first half. The ground options put on as big of a show in the second half.

Texas 35, Missouri 3.
Final Score: 56-31
Even when Colt McCoy made bad decisions (his third touchdown), he scored touchdowns. McCoy finished with 337 yds, 2 TD, 23 rush yds, 2 TD. In the process, he set a Texas career touchdown record on Saturday with 82 scores (‘most TD responsible for’). Vince Young held the record previously with 81. McCoy is only a junior.

La.-Mon 35, North Texas 6.
Final Score: 35-23.
Needless to say, the Warhawks lifted off the gas pedal in the second half. The star of the show was Kinsmon Lancaster, who scored three first half touchdowns as the star for Charlie Weatherbie’s squad. North Texas, on the other hand, remains winless.

The Shootout at Skelly

This game gets is own section. Tulsa and UTEP combined for 112 points and 1,129 yards in Tulsa, Okla. What is even more amazing is the fact that the two teams ran 142 plays and turned the ball over only once (UTEP fumble). David Johnson and Trevor Vittatoe combined for 740 passing yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions. I mean, what did we expect from a game that was tied at 28 heading into the second quarter.

Even Courtney Tennial experienced an offensive explosion. Heading into this game, Tennial had 10 carries for 13 yards (and five touchdowns). He rushed for an astonishing 7.4 yards per carry on an astronomical five carries (37 yards).

Final score: Tulsa 77, UTEP 35.

Mr. Consistency

After 217 yards against Wisconsin this weekend, Iowa’s Shonn Greene is the first FBS running back to run for over 100 yards in each of his first eight games this season. Then, for good measure, he added four touchdowns. He is averaging 144 ypg in 2008.

Freshman of the Week

Keola Antolin, RB, Arizona
What? No DeAndre Brown? The 6’6” receiver was not as big as the 5’8” tailback, however, as the Wildcats upset the ranked Cal Golden Bears. After a Nic Grigsby fumbled, Antolin got the bulk of the carries in his first extended action and performed remarkably. Little Antolin rushed for 149 yards on 21 carries (7.1). He added three touchdowns and a reception as well. Brown gets the runner-up blue ribbon.
