Quarterback Rankings
Deserves a Second Look:Thaddeus Lewis, Duke (Virginia)
Reports are that Duke has not been favored in an ACC game since 2002. Saturday, the Blue Devils are laying 6.5 points to the visiting Virginia Cavaliers. Lewis has been the reason. The Cavs have allowed 52 and 45 points in its two BCS games this season. His line: 714 passing yards, 5 TD, 0 INT, 107 rush yards, TD.
Tony Pike, Cincinnati (@ Akron)
Against Miami-OH last week, Pike completed 83.3% of his passes (20/24). He added 241 yards and three touchdowns. Not bad for the kid's first start. Akron ranks 82nd in total defense, 116th in rushing defense and 98th in pass effiency defense. Highly accurate quarterback, plus inefficient pass defense equals no brainer.
Omar Clayton, UNLV (Nevada)
Check this fantasy line out: 777 yards, 9 TD, 0 INT, 56 rush yards, TD. Not bad for a quarterback who played the last six quarters with a broken jaw. Nevada's numbers are a bit deceiving but 106th in the nation is till 106th. Their defense is just good enough to keep the game close. The Battle for the Fremont Cannon could be a shootout.
Other Names to Consider:
Corey Leonard, Arkansas State (@ Memphis)
Leads the conference in total offense (296.7 ypg) and passer efficiency (162.8).
Ryan Lindley, San Diego State (Idaho)
Coach says they want to throw even more? He is already at 44 per game!
Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State (Minnesota)
Line: 228 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT, 195 rush yards, TD in very limited action.
Better Think Twice:
Adam Weber, Minnesota (@ Ohio State)
The Gophers are 4-0 thanks in large part to a solid ground attack, dependable receivers and the Big Ten second most efficient passer (164.8). But this is Ohio State and the Horseshoe. And one of the nation's best defenses. Enough said.
Cullen Harper, Clemson (Maryland)
This is the schizophrenic bowl. Clemson is clearly favored and should win this game. If the Maryland from Murfreesboro, Tennessee shows up, Harper might not be a bad play. If the Maryland that torched a pretty good Cal team comes to play, it will be another long day of being a Clemson fan. Until the offensive line proves it can protect him and the receivers can make plays, you may want to bench Harper.
Matt Grothe, South Florida (@ N.C. State)
This one is tough as well. Grothe is a dual-threat fantasy owners' dream. But N.C. State is always solid on defense. Tom O'Brien teams are going to be well-coached as was evident by the big win last week over East Carolina. Grothe will lead the Bulls to a close, low scoring victory.
Joe Ganz, Nebraska (Virginia Tech)
Despite all of the Hokies struggles on offense, Frank Beamer and Bud Foster still coach this football team. The defense will be ready to play on the big stage that is Memorial Stadium. Ganz has only one touchdown pass in his last two games.
Running Back Rankings
Deserves a Second Look:
Tarrion Adams, Tulsa (Central Arkansas)
This counts as Charles Clay as well. Adams, however, should have the big day on the ground. This Tulsa offense is picking up right where it left off last season. This should be a blowout and the ground game should get plenty of work in the second half.
Jourdan Brooks, Rutgers (Morgan State)
The big 245 pound hammer got a first workout last week against Navy (first game over seven carries this season). He played very well (134-2) and should once again be featured in a game that Rutgers needs to build confidence.
Vai Taua, Nevada (@ UNLV)
He is no Luke Lippincott but Taua should start putting up big numbers in WAC play. He rushed for 103 yards and two scores in a back-up role against teams not named Texas Tech and Missouri - both ranked
currently in the top-10. The 225-pounder has the starters role should get all the goal line carries in what could be a high-scoring affair between two solid offenses.
Matt Asaita / Darrell Mack, Utah (Weber State)
This might be one of the best running back tandems in the nation that no one talks about. Both have 100-yards games and both have a three-touchdown performance in 2008. Expect the offense to role against the Wildcats. Be sure to play all your Utes.
Better Think Twice:
Tyrell Sutton, Northwestern (@ Iowa)
Injury aside, this would be a tough match-up. Iowa is ranked 5th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only three touchdowns so far this season. They are ranked 19th in total defense as well. Sutton has missed practice time with a hamstring-ankle combo but should start. I am putting him on the bench this week.
Arian Foster, Tennessee (@ Auburn)
Did you watch the game last week? I was there. It was not pretty and Auburn is good.
Ryan Mathews, Fresno State (@ UCLA)
Much like Virginia Tech, the offensive struggles does not mean poor defense. The Bruins have yet to surrender a 100-yard rusher this season and likely will not again. One-T is going to be a great college football player, but UCLA owns one of the nation's best defensive tackle tandem's in Brigham Harwell and Brian Price.
Other bad match-ups, but bench at your own risk:
Greg Little, North Carolina (@ Miami)
No quarterback and a Miami defense is not a good combination
Shun White, Navy (@ Wake Forest)
Senior laden defense will play with patience against option
P.J. Hill, Wisconsin (@ Michigan)
In two career games versus Michigan: 68 yards (2.7 ypc), 0 TD
Wide Receiver Rankings
Deserves a Second Look:
Brandon Banks / Deon Murphy, Kansas State (ULL)
It didn't look like Ron Prince knew he could hand it off last week
Marty Gilyard / Dominick Goodman, Cincinnati (@ Akron)
See Tony Pike above
Quan Cosby / Jordan Shipley, Texas (Arkansas)
Arkansas is not a good football team, yet
D’Andre Goodwin, Washington (Stanford)
Jake Locker will explode at some point and Stanford is not a great road team
Better Think Twice:
Eric Decker, Minnesota (@ Ohio State)
See Adam Weber above
Brandon Gibson, Washington State (Oregon)
Cougars quarterback could be running for his life all game
Brandon Tate / Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina (@ Miami)
Tate might score but this could be statement game for Canes
Trae Johnson, Tulsa (Central Arkansas)
Steven Lassan's Milk Carton Special
Spot Start Pick-ups:
1. Boston College (Rhode Island)
2. Utah (Weber State)
3. Oregon (@ Washington State)
4. Western Michigan (Temple)
5. Texas (Arkansas)
