Freshman Tracker: Week 4
It was mop-up duty in a very lopsided contest, but true freshman quarterback Darron Thomas almost completed what would have been one of the greatest comebacks in NCAA history. Thomas - a duel-threat from Aldine, Texas - threw for 210 yards and three fourth quarter touchdowns for the Ducks. It only makes the murky Oregon quarterback situation that much more opaque.
On the flip side of this game was redshirt frosh signal caller Kellen Moore. He led the Broncos to 24 unanswered second quarter points to break open the game. Moore finished with 386 yards and three touchdowns against what was supposed to be a very solid Duck secondary. It pushes Boise State road-BCS record to 1-13.
Business As Usual:
Terrelle Pryor, OSU (10/16, 139 yds, 4 TD, INT, 66 rush yds)
We will see how many important Big Ten snaps he will take very soon.
Robert Griffin, Baylor (14/25, 208, 3 TD, 46 rush yds, TD)
The greatest Baylor quarterback of all time after only three starts?
The Fighting Redshirts:
Robert Marve, Miami (16/22, 212 yds, 2 TD, INT)
1-1 as starter in two road starts at Florida and at Texas A&M.
Kellen Moore, Boise State (24/36, 386 yds, 3 TD, INT)
Maybe the second biggest win school history?
Austin Davis, Southern Miss (27/49, 308 yds, TD, INT, 45 rush yds, TD)
Duel-threat continues to impress in the new Larry Fedora spread attack.
Willy Korn, Clemson (7/7, 76 yds, TD, 19 rush yds, TD)
The future of the Tigers' quarterback position was on display against South Carolina State.
The 4-0 Gophers Tandem:
The Gophers won a single game last year. Thanks to a true freshman running back tandem - among other things - they have quadrupled their win total. Deleon Eskridge rushed for 78 yards and a pair of scores while adding 61 receiving yards on six receptions. Shady Salamon picked up 50 yards and a touchdown as well. With fantasy studs Adam Weber and Eric Decker taking most of the focus off these two, Minnesota fans have to be optimistic about the future of the running game.
Its a School Night:
Two freshman runners had huge games in big wins on days not named Saturday. Louisville’s Victor Anderson rushed for 176 yards on 18 carries and scored three times in a big win at home over Kansas State on Wednesday night. The following night saw Colorado’s Rodney Stewart put up 166 yards on 28 carries in the upset victory over West Virginia. And then they both had to go to class the next day.
The 2008 Wide Receiver Class:
The top four wide receivers in the class of 2008 all reached the end zone this weekend. It was arguably the single greatest wide receiver class in history before any of them got onto the college gridiron. Fans are seeing very quickly just how good this collection of talent really is. Maybe those recruiting rankings aren't so bad after all. (# is parenthesis was AC100 national rank)
1. (#2) Julio Jones, Alabama (1 rec, 25 yds, TD)
2. (#6) A.J. Green, Georgia (8 rec, 159 yds, TD)
3. (#13) Michael Floyd, Notre Dame (7 rec, 86 yds, TD)
4. (#17) DeAndre Brown, Southern Miss (3 rec, 80 yds, TD)
