CFB Fantasy -- Top 100 RB
Ohio State’s Chris Wells began the preseason atop our fantasy running back rankings and the junior back gets the nod once again in our updated look at the 2008 season. Wells will be running behind a solid offensive line and should be able to increase his yardage and rushing totals this year. Although Wells tops the running back rankings, Southern Mississippi’s Damion Fletcher isn’t too far behind. New coach Larry Fedora will bring his spread offense into the mix, which should benefit Fletcher’s numbers. Rounding out the top five will be Boise State’s Ian Johnson, Pitt’s LeSean McCoy and BYU’s Harvey Unga.
Running back battles will impact fantasy owners this season and makes for tough decisions on draft day. Texas A&M’s Mike Goodson and Jorvorskie Lane will continue to share time, but coach Mike Sherman would like to get Goodson more involved with the offense this year. Mississippi’s Enrique Davis is locked into a battle with Cordera Eason for starting time, but we like the incoming freshman to eventually win the job.
With several running back battles still up in the air, owners should monitor these closely throughout fall practice and don’t be afraid to take a few sleepers on draft day. Toledo’s DaJuane Collins rushed for over 600 yards in a backup role last season and has the full workload in 2008. Keep an eye on Illinois’ Daniel Dufrene. Rashard Mendenhall is gone to the NFL, making Dufrene the new go-to guy in the Fighting Illini backfield.
