Mid-Major Fantasy QB Rankings
1. Dan LeFevour, Central Michigan (JR)
Despite offensive guru and head coach Brian Kelly leaving Central Michigan for Cincinnati, LeFevour continued to give weekly nightmares to MAC defenses. LeFevour posted 46 total touchdowns, while rushing for 1,122 yards and throwing for an additional 3,652 yards. Even though the Chippewas struggled early in the year, first-year coach Butch Jones eventually righted the ship and by the end of the year, LeFevour was one of the NCAA's top quarterbacks. Expect much of the same from LeFevour in 2008, along with a slight increase in his passing yards and touchdowns.
2. Nate Davis, Ball State (JR)
Several quality quarterbacks have emerged out of the MAC and Davis is the next one to make a splash on the national scene. The junior quarterback led the Cardinals to their first bowl game since 1996, while passing for 30 touchdowns and 3,667 yards. Fantasy owners should expect Davis should see an increase in production in 2008, especially since the Cardinals return receiver Dante Love and tight end Darius Hill.
Injuries have been a factor in Holbrook’s career and if the senior quarterback can stay healthy, he should be one of the top ten fantasy quarterbacks. Although Holbrook was injured for parts of last season, he still managed 3,866 yards and 26 touchdowns. Head coach Hal Mumme knows offense and the Aggies won’t shy away from throwing at least 40 passes per game – making Holbrook the top fantasy quarterback in the WAC.
4. Rusty Smith, Florida Atlantic (JR)
In his first season as a full-time starter, Smith threw for 3,688 yards and 32 touchdowns – while leading the Owls to a Sun Belt championship. The junior should continue to improve his numbers in 2008, especially with a solid cast of weapons returning. The Owls are the class of the Sun Belt and Smith should be among the top 15 fantasy quarterbacks.
5. Max Hall, BYU (JR)
Looking for the next BCS-buster? Look no further than BYU. The Cougars return plenty of options on the offensive side of the ball, including Hall and his top receivers. In his first season as a starter last year, the junior quarterback tossed 3,848 yards and 26 touchdowns. With the junior having another spring practice session under his belt, look for another season of continued improvement and productive fantasy numbers.
6. Chase Clement, Rice (SR)
A change in head coaches and offensive philosophy caused the Owl offense to begin the year a little on the sluggish side, but things significantly improved down the stretch. The senior compiled 19 touchdowns in the last five games – including an eight touchdown performance against UTEP. With receiver Jarett Dillard and tight end James Casey returning in 2008, Clement should have another strong season – likely topping 40 total touchdowns.
7. Justin Willis, SMU (JR)
With June Jones coming from Hawaii to SMU, fantasy owners have to like Willis’ potential for the 2008 season. Willis threw for 25 touchdowns and 2,944 yards last season, while the Mustangs went through a dismal 1-11 season. With Jones calling the shots, expect the Mustang offense to post significant passing totals, with Willis totaling over 30 passing touchdowns and 3,800 passing yards.
8. Tyler Graunke, Hawaii (SR)
With June Jones departing to SMU, the Warriors are starting over and things could look a little different in 2008. The Warrior offense is likely to change, with the rushing attack playing a bigger role. Hawaii quarterbacks have been a major fantasy factor under Jones, but they could take a step back in 2008. Graunke proved to be a solid player when Colt Brennan was injured last year, but is a draft day gamble.
9. Tyler Sheehan, Bowling Green (JR)
In his first full season as a starter, Sheehan threw for 3,264 yards and 23 touchdowns, while adding three scores on the ground. The junior quarterback needs to be a little more consistent in the passing game and fantasy owners would like a slight bump in the yardage each week. The Falcons return a wealth of options at receiver and running back, making Sheehan a promising pick in 2008.
10. Colin Kaepernick, Nevada (SO)
An injury to Nick Graziano against Fresno State opened the door for Kaepernick to become the Wolf Pack’s top quarterback – and he did not disappoint. Kaepernick totaled 25 touchdowns in eight starts, while rushing for 593 yards and throwing for 2,175. Kaepernick does not have a clear path to the starting job in 2008, as Graziano will figure into the mix in fall practice. Despite Graziano’s presence, we expect Kaepernick to win the starting spot and have a top 20 fantasy season among quarterbacks.
11.Trevor Vittatoe, UTEP (SO)
12.David Johnson, Tulsa (SR)
13.Brian Johnson, Utah (SR)
14.Giovanni Vizza, North Texas (SO)
15.Michael Desormeaux, UL Lafayette (SR)
16.Tim Hiller, Western Michigan (JR)
17.Corey Leonard, Arkansas State (JR)
18.Kellen Moore, Boise State (FR)
19.Tom Brandstater, Fresno State (SR)
20.Dwight Dasher, MTSU (SO)
21.Jamie Hampton, Troy (SO)
22.Julian Edelman, Kent State (SR)
23.Omar Clayton, UNLV (SO)
24.Andy Dalton, TCU (SO)
25.Arkelon Hall, Memphis (JR)
