Devin Ebanks had 22 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists as sixth-ranked West Virginia survived an overtime scare to take a 90-84 win over Seton Hall in the Big East opener for both squads.

Da'Sean Butler had 21 points, six rebounds and six assists while Kevin Jones added 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Mountaineers (10-0, 1-0 Big East), who were coming off a 10-point win over Ole Miss on Wednesday.

Jeremy Hazell totaled 41 points and seven rebounds while Herb Pope added 11 points and 11 boards for the Pirates (9-2, 0-1), who have dropped two of three after winning their first eight games of the season.

Hazell's three-pointer at the end of regulation forced overtime, but Butler got a three-pointer and Ebanks followed with a jumper to give West Virginia a five-point lead just over a minute into the extra frame.

Pope was fouled on a shot attempt with 3:20 to play, but missed both free throws.

After a West Virginia miss, Hazell hit 1-of-2 at the line, and John Flowers turned it back over to Seton Hall. Hazell then put in a layup to make it a two-point game with just over two minutes to play.

Butler made two from the line to again make it a four-point game for WVU.

Hazell then missed a three-pointer and Ebanks missed his jumper, but Jones grabbed the offensive board and buried a long three-ball for a seven-point lead to seal the win with 32.7 seconds to play.

Holding a two-point lead to start the second half, West Virginia made it a six-point contest when Butler put in a pair from the line close to five minutes in.

The Mountaineers later built their lead to nine points with Jones' slam allowing for a 59-50 advantage with just over nine minutes to play in the game.

Seton Hall cut that deficit to three points several times with Eugene Harvey's layup making it a 68-65 game with under three minutes to play.

The Mountaineers, though, answered with a layup from Jones, an Ebanks bucket and a three-point play from Butler for a 75-65 advantage with just under a minute to go.

However, Seton Hall scored the next nine points as Harvey started it with two free throws and a layup. Ferrakohn Hall then slammed for two and Hazell hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point game.

Butler answered with two from the line, but Hazell buried a long three-pointer with 6.9 seconds to play to tie the game. Ebanks' desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer failed to find the cylinder.

West Virginia started the game by scoring 15 of the first 18 points capped by Darryl Bryant's three-pointer just under six minutes in.

Trailing by 11 later in the half, the Pirates ripped off a 13-2 run and tied the game at 33 on the strength of Hazell, who had 10 points during the burst and finished the run with a three-pointer with under four minutes left in the half.

West Virginia eventually took a 41-39 lead into the break.
