Top spot challenged

The Spurs hold on to their No. 1 ranking for the eighth week in a row, but this is as close as they have come to losing that top ranking since they were the No. 2 team in Week 12.

As a matter of fact, the top five is about as close as it's been all season.

San Antonio fell to the Lakers 99-83 on Sunday — two days after blowing out Miami by 30. For the Lakers, it was their seventh straight victory to end a week that propelled them from sixth to second in the Week 20 poll.

A grind up top

It's Groundhog Day at the top as the San Antonio Spurs are No. 1 in the Week 20 Athlon Sports NBA Power Rankings for the seventh straight week.

A six-game lead over second place in the Western Conference with 23 games to has the Spurs feeling pretty safe about their standing come playoff time. However, if there is any team that may catch them it is a Dallas Mavericks squad that has ascended back up the rankings after injuries plagued them in the middle of the season. Dallas has won nine of its last 10 and jumps to No. 2 in this week's poll.
