Oakland outlasted the New York Yankees 3-2 in 18 innings on Thursday in the 1,194th meeting between the two franchises. The 18-inning marathon took five hours and 35 minutes to decide, making it both the longest game ever in the series between the A's and Yankees and the longest day game ever played at the Coliseum. Nate Freiman, who entered the game in the top of the 16th, finally won it on a broken-bat, bases-loaded single off of Yankees closer Mariano Rivera two innings later. The A's winning rally started with a one-out single by John Jaso off of losing pitcher Preston Claiborne.
