#5 Boise State

Broncos

NATIONAL FORECAST

#5

Mountain West PREDICTION

#1

HEAD COACH: Chris Petersen, 61–5 (5 years) | OFF. COORDINATOR: Brent Pease | DEF. COORDINATOR: Pete Kwiatkowski

OFFENSE

Senior quarterback Kellen Moore, who finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting last year, and senior tailback Doug Martin, who has a career average of 6.0 yards per carry, lead what should be another high-scoring Broncos offense.

Left tackle Nate Potter and center Thomas Byrd, seniors who earned All-WAC honors last year, highlight a strong offensive line that rarely allows defenders to touch Moore. The lefty led the nation in pass efficiency last year. He’s on pace to smash the FBS record for career wins by a quarterback, having posting a 38–2 mark in his first three seasons. His two losses were by a total of four points.

Moore does face some challenges this year, however. The Broncos lost standout wide receivers Austin Pettis and Titus Young, and offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin left to take a job at Texas. Former wide receivers coach Brent Pease, who served as a coordinator at Baylor and Kentucky, replaced Harsin in what should be a seamless transition. Pease, a former quarterback, will give Moore plenty of chances to chuck it, but he also wants to take advantage of Martin, who accumulated 1,598 yards from scrimmage last season.

The Debate

Boise State will beat Georgia and win its third-straight opener against a BCS foe.

DEFENSE

The Broncos return the bulk of a defense that ranked in the top seven in the nation in scoring defense (second), total defense (second), rushing defense (seventh), pass defense (fourth), pass efficiency defense (second), sacks (first) and tackles for a loss (second).
The line, regarded as one of the best in college football last year, returns all but one player. Ends Shea McClellin and Tyrone Crawford and tackles Billy Winn and Chase Baker combined for 25.5 sacks last year, more than nearly half of the FBS teams.

The question marks are on the back end, where the Broncos need to replace four-year starting strong safety Jeron Johnson, three-year starting cornerback Brandyn Thompson and two-year starting nickel back Winston Venable. Johnson led the team in tackles in each of the past three years. All-WAC safety George Iloka is back, and middle linebacker Byron Hout, whose 2010 season ended early because of a broken foot, is an important cog in the run defense.

Key Player
" alt="" />

Kellen Moore, QB Has 74 touchdown passes against nine interceptions over the last two seasons.

Doug Martin, RB Senior bruiser averaged 6.3 yards per carry last season.

Shea McClellin, DE Tenacious pass rusher on the nation’s best defensive line.

2011 Schedule
DATE OPPONENT
Sept. 3rd at Georgia (Atlanta, GA)
Sept. 17th at Toledo
Sept. 24th Tulsa
Oct. 1st Nevada
Oct. 7th at Fresno State
Oct. 15th at Colorado State
Oct. 22nd Air Force
Nov. 5th at UNLV
Nov. 12th TCU
Nov. 19th at San Diego State
Nov. 26th Wyoming
Dec. 3rd New Mexico

SPECIALISTS

The Broncos must replace four-year starting kicker/punter Kyle Brotzman, which could lead to some adventures in the kicking game. The staff recruited Jake Van Ginkel to fill the kicking job, but the Broncos had four field goal kickers in spring ball, too. Senior punter Brad Elkin was redshirted last year to preserve him for this season. The Broncos should have outstanding return units but struggled covering kickoffs last season — an area of concern considering that their non-conference schedule is laced with some of the best kickoff returners in the nation.

FINAL ANALYSIS

For the third straight year, the Broncos open the season with a showcase game that could push them into the national title conversation. They face Georgia in Atlanta after beating Oregon (2009) and Virginia Tech (2010) in the past two openers. And the schedule should help the Broncos sway skeptics. All five non-conference opponents played in bowls last year, and the Broncos will host fellow BCS buster TCU in a November showdown in the schools’ only meeting as Mountain West Conference rivals. If the Broncos beat Georgia and TCU — and look good doing it — they might be able to finish the historic quest for a title shot that they began last year.

#6 Notre Dame

Fighting Irish

NATIONAL FORECAST

#6

Independent PREDICTION

#1

HEAD COACH: Brian Kelly, 8–5 (1 year) | OFF. COORDINATOR: Charley Molnar | DEF. COORDINATOR: Bob Diaco

OFFENSE

Although the Irish have two quarterbacks with playing experience — which is two more than they had a year ago at this time — the position remains a bit unsettled with the talented Dayne Crist and the savvy Tommy Rees reaching for the starting job. Crist went 4–5 as the starter without much help from a rushing attack or a defense. When Rees took over for the injured Crist, both the running game and the defense picked up, which made Rees a winner despite his three interceptions and a fumble in a comeback victory at USC. Now talented youngsters Andrew Hendrix and Everett Golson are in the mix.

The Irish are lacking depth at running back and receiver, but they still boast a decent starting unit with Cierre Wood at running back, Michael Floyd, Theo Riddick and TJ Jones at wide receiver, and Tyler Eifert at tight end.

The Irish need senior Jonas Gray (75 career carries) to provide the big-back option that graduated Robert Hughes offered in victories over USC and Miami. Senior John Goodman (15 catches) and junior Robby Toma (14) also will be in the mix at receiver, as will senior Mike Ragone, redshirt freshman Alex Welch, and possibly true freshman Ben Koyack at tight end.
The line is the most settled area on offense with starters returning at both tackles (Taylor Dever and Zack Martin), right guard (Trevor Robinson) and center (Braxston Cave).

The Debate

Notre Dame will go undefeated in 2011.

DEFENSE

Eight starters are back from a defense that improved as the 2010 season progressed, including junior inside linebacker Manti Te’o, whose 133 tackles were the most by an Irish defender in 27 seasons. Te’o is joined along the front seven by veteran ends Kapron Lewis-Moore and Ethan Johnson, as well as four exciting up-and-comers — redshirt freshman nose guard Louis Nix III, true freshman ends Aaron Lynch and Stephon Tuitt, and true freshman outside linebacker Ishaq Williams. The outside linebacker corps also is solid with veteran Darius Fleming at the Cat outside linebacker spot and sophomore Prince Shembo at the Dog outside linebacker position.

The Irish lost a good one in the secondary to graduation — cornerback Darrin Walls — but Gary Gray and Robert Blanton both excelled in 2010 and are playing with confidence and a swagger. Tying it all together on the back end is fifth-year senior Harrison Smith, whose seven interceptions in 2010 were the most by an Irish defensive back in eight seasons.

Key Player
" alt="" />

Michael Floyd, WR Emerged as a bona fide star in ’10 with 79 receptions for 1,025 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Manti Te’o, LB His 133 tackles were the most by an Irish player in 27 seasons.

Darius Fleming, LB A 23-game starter with 25.5 career tackles for a loss, 11.5 sacks; paced the Irish in both categories in 2010.

2011 Schedule
DATE OPPONENT
Sept. 3rd South Florida
Sept. 10th at Michigan
Sept. 17th Michigan State
Sept. 24th Pittsburgh
Oct. 1st at Purdue
Oct. 8th Air Force
Oct. 22nd USC
Oct. 29th Navy
Nov. 5th at Wake Forest
Nov. 12th Maryland (Landover, MD)
Nov. 19th Boston College
Nov. 26th at Stanford

SPECIALISTS

David Ruffer, who hit the first 18 field goal attempts of the 2010 season, is back to contend for the Lou Groza Award. Early entry freshman Kyle Brindza will challenge for the punting job, which has been handled by Ben Turk the better part of 2009 and all of 2010. Bennett Jackson returns as the leading candidate to handle kickoffs after averaging 22.2 yards per his 29 attempts. Riddick could be a real threat returning punts.

FINAL ANALYSIS

Most of the defenders who spearheaded the 2010 revival are returning, and so are most of those skill position athletes who were forced into the lineup prematurely due to injuries. Sprinkle Floyd back into the mix, maximize Wood’s abilities, and find a quarterback who can avoid the crucial mistake, and it looks like the Irish should be able to generate enough offense to accommodate an improving and suddenly depth-laden defense. The combination of Kelly’s offensive track record and the improving defense could send the Irish in pursuit of a BCS bid in 2011.

College Fantasy Mock Draft

The 2011 college football season is still a couple of months away. However, it's never too early to start the research for the upcoming fantasy season.

For the third year in a row, Houston's Case Keenum gets the nod as the No. 1 overall pick. Keenum missed most of last year due to a torn ACL, but should be 100 percent in time for the season. Although Keenum certainly has his question marks, the senior is one of the safest picks on the board. Running back LaMichael James and receivers Justin Blackmon and Ryan Broyles should round out the top four in most drafts this fall.
