With all of the uncertainty surrounding the Big East, this game is a chance for the conference to make a statement. West Virginia is the Big East’s top-ranked team and the preseason favorite to win the conference title. What better way to make a splash on the national scene than by beating a top five team?

West Virginia’s Dana Holgorsen and Arkansas’ Bobby Petrino are known for their high-octane offenses, but both coaches will face difficult tests on Saturday.

There is nothing like making a positive first gridiron impression on your fan base, and many new coaches around college football did that over the weekend. Michigan’s Brady Hoke, Florida’s Will Muschamp, Stanford’s David Shaw and West Virginia’s Dana Holgorsen were among those new bosses who had expected wins in Week 1. Minnesota’s Jerry Kill and Miami’s Al Golden had impressive first games despite losing, while Indiana’s Kevin Wilson and Colorado’s Jon Embree had a rough Saturday.

We certainly do not condone gambling here at Athlon Sports, but much can be gleaned from a quick look at the points spreads. Week One of the college football season contains the most uncertainty of any week of year. Teams from coast to coast will wildly under- and over-achieve based upon preseason expectations, and there is much to be won because of it.
