2012 Heisman Trophy Watchlist: Week 1

Each week the Athlon editors cast their ballots for college football's Most Outstanding player.

Each week, the Athlon editors vote on the most prestigious award in all of college football. A nine-man conglomerate of college football gurus from Athlon Sports will vote for their top Heisman Trophy candidates. The votes will be tallied and the result will be posted as the Athlon Sports Heisman Watch List every Wednesday of the regular season.

It's not easy getting college football coaches to honestly comment on another coach, player or team. Most coaches don't want to give opposing teams billboard material, which is why there is a lot of coach speak during the year. In order to get an accurate assessment of teams heading into 2012, Athlon asked coaches around each conference to talk anonymously about their opponents.

College Football's Top Defensive Linemen for 2012

South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney is primed for a monster 2012 season.

Winning the battle in the trenches is crucial to claiming college football's national championship. The SEC has claimed six consecutive national titles, so it should come as no surprise this conference has some of the top defensive linemen. South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney is in for a monster sophomore season, while LSU's Sam Montgomery will make a run at first-team All-American honors. The SEC is represented in the defensive tackles, as four of the top 10 reside from the conference.

The ACC saw names like Sammy Watkins and Giovani Bernard produce more than just All-ACC honors as freshmen last fall.

Virginia Tech Football Unveils New Hokie Whiteout Helmet

New helmets and jerseys seem to be popping up every day during college football's offseason. Northwestern, Mississippi State, Nebraska and Wisconsin are just some of the teams that have unveiled new threads for 2012. 

And even if teams don't change their whole combination, there's always the one-game special. That's the case with Virginia Tech, as the Hokies unveiled a special whiteout helmet that will be worn on Sept. 8 against Austin Peay.
