The most important number of the week may as well be five: As in five overtimes to settle Notre Dame’s win over Louisville in the longest game since UConn and Syracuse played six OTs in the Big East quarterfinals in 2009.

The first 40 minutes crawled along with only 120 points in regulation before Notre Dame walked away with a 104-101 win in the final 25 minutes.

With the 15th season of BCS bowl action just about ready to kickoff, Athlon reviewed the tapes of the four (now five) biggest bowl games in college football. Since 1998, teams have been fighting to land a spot in the BCS and here are those teams whose performances didn’t live up to the spotlight and prestige attached to the bowl they played in.

Aside from the turmoil caused by conference realignment, the Big East has continued some familiar trends: Syracuse continues to be among the national elite with a bench player taking his turn in the spotlight, Louisville continues to be a defensive pest, and Georgetown is at its best when no one expects big things out of the Hoyas.

But the league has its share of surprises, such as Cincinnati’s ascent and a flop of a season for Florida State.

If the unofficial start of the SEC-Big East Challenge began in the Bahamas on Friday, the Big East is in good shape.

Louisville defeated SEC newcomer Missouri 84-61 in a Battle 4 Atlantis semifinal, but, of course, the game was not part of the official Challenge, which begins Thursday and continues through Saturday. Neither Louisville nor Missouri are taking part in the 12-game event.

The next two years will mark the end of an era for the Big East.

No more Jim Calhoun this season. No more Syracuse and no more Pittsburgh next season. No more Notre Dame in the years to come.

Even after every recruit signed, after players were drafted, and after (nearly) every coaching change was made, college basketball news impacting the 2012-13 season continued to break through the late summer and early fall.

The ACC basketball tournament soon could feature games such as Syracuse-Pittsburgh, and now Notre Dame-Miami.

It will be a strange sight in Greensboro, N.C., but Notre Dame’s announcement it will join the ACC in all sports besides football (and hockey) is part of new normal.

With the news breaking today, there are a handful of questions out there, from when the move will actually occur as well as questions regarding the football schedule and bowl lineup.
