Buck, McCarver Rise to the Occasion
By: Rob Doster | 10/28/11, 5:11 AM EDT
Part of great announcing is knowing when to shut up and let the images do the talking. Popular whipping boys Joe Buck and Tim McCarver proved that in Game 6 of the World Series. Buck gets pounded for a sleepy delivery that makes Joe Lieberman sound like Gus Johnson, but he rose to the magnificence of the occasion, letting the aftermath of the David Freese walk-off speak for itself before signing off with an appropriate nod to his legendary father ("We'll see you tomorrow night."). And McCarver, who's forgotten more baseball than I'll ever know and proves it night after night, joined his partner in pulling back and letting the images carry the moment. Dumping on Buck and McCarver has replaced baseball as our national pastime, but sometimes they remind you why they have their jobs. Last night was one of those times.
