Auburn, Alabama Land AC100 Talents

The biggest news recruiting fans have seen in month happened over the weekend. The No. 3 running back in the nation Michael Dyer (Little Rock, Ark.) has committed to the Auburn Tigers. He is one of the top committed players in the nation — the top seven in the AC100 are still uncommitted.

Dyer has posted rediculous numbers in his career at Little Rock Christian. Two weeks ago, the 5-foot-10, 195 pound tailback became the state of Arkansas' all-time high school rushing leader. He scored five touchdowns and gained 175 yards on 18 carries against Lakeside and pushed his total passed the previous state record of 7,122 yards. Dyer is the No. 11 rated player in the AC100 and picked Auburn over Tennessee, Arkansas and Ole Miss among others. He is the Tigers first AC100 commitment.

Tennessee Vol fans did not mourn the brutal 19-15 loss to UCLA for too long. After the Big Orange offense looked rather inept against an up-and-coming Bruin bunch, the Vols got some big news in the recruiting world.

In the brief three year history of the Athlon Consensus 100, no team has landed more than two AC100 prospects on a single day not named National Signing Day. That changed this weekend as Lane Kiffin and his staff put together one of the best recruiting weekends this editor has seen in years. Not only was the visit sheet a who's who of high school seniors, but the Vols landed three AC100 talents — including one already committed to a southern powerhouse.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Nick Saban’s 20th commitment is a big one, as he locked up the AC100 No. 70 player in Shallotte (N.C.) West Brunswick’s Alfy Hill. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive end had 112 tackles last season and has 20 in two games so far this year.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

The big news of the week was in Lincoln where Big Red received three commitments to the 2010 class. That trio - their sixth, seventh, and eighth overall verbals - consists of Missouri City (Texas) Hightower’s Harvey Jackson, River Ridge (La.) John Curtis’ Walker Ashburn and Arlington (Texas) Juan Seguin’s Ciante Evans. Jackson is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound safety, while Ashburn is a 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive end who had 90 tackles with 12 sacks as a junior. Evans is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound cornerback who nabbed four interceptions a year ago.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Nick Saban already knew his 21st commitment fairly well. After all, Memphis (Tenn.) Evangelical Christian School’s Harrison Jones is the younger brother of Barrett Jones, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman with the Crimson Tide. The younger Jones, a 6-foot-4, 232-pound tight end, will follow his brother’s and father’s footsteps in Tuscaloosa. Their father, Rex, played basketball at Alabama from 1981-84.

The second top-10 AC100 prospect has announced his school of choice. Hillside (Ill.) Proviso West stud wide receiver prospect Kyle Prater chose Tuesday to attend the University of Southern California.The 6-4, 200 pound red zone match-up nightmare is the nation's No. 2 rated wide receiver. He picked USC over Tennessee, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Illinois and Alabama. Some thought that the Irish might have the best chance seeing as how he is the cousin of former ND quarterback Carlyle Holiday. However, after a stellar trip to the west coast and the golden shore, Prater said USC was too perfect of a fit.

Oklahoma Sooners

Bob Stoops and staff got two more verbals over the last week to bring their total to 23 commitments for the 2010 class. First, the Sooners got a pledge from Mizzou country in Columbia (Mo.) Rock Bridge tight end Trey Millard, and then they landed a top flight linebacker from a powerhouse program in Fort Worth (Texas) Dunbar’s Rashod Favors.

Before our analysis of the Heartland recruits in the Athlon Consensus 100, we have to start the roundup with Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State staff. The Cowboys are currently the hottest recruiting team in the nation, picking up seven commitments over the last week. The latest verbal was from Houston (Texas) Bellaire defensive end Joseph Okafor, who becomes the fourth defensive lineman to pledge in the last week. OSU is now up to 22 commitments in he 2010 class, and they may be headed to a possible Top-10 class.

LSU Tigers

Les Miles’ crew received their 22nd commitment from a familiar face in Ocean Springs (Miss.) tight end Travis Dickson. The 6-foot-3, 228-pounder is the younger brother of current LSU tight end Richard Dickson. The younger Dickson was obviously very comfortable in Baton Rouge and says “...there's nothing like Death Valley on a Saturday night."

As the season gets closer, recruiting really starts to pick-up. The last couple of weeks has seen elite top-50 talent make some moves. Justin McCay (No. 31 in the AC100) and Robert Woods (No. 35) have each announced their commitments to Oklahoma and USC respectively. There has also been a plethora of list narrowing.

This week there has been more action atop the AC100...

-- Seantrel Henderson, the nation's top prospect, has set his five official visits. Ohio State, Florida, USC, Notre Dame and Oklahoma. The Golden Gophers are mysteriously absent from this list but Minnesota fans need not worry. He has been to campus so many times that there is no need for an official. Ohio State, USC and Minnesota appear to be his favorites with Notre Dame, Florida and Oklahoma still fighting the uphill battle.

Recruiting: Robert Woods Commits

Some huge news broke Wednesday afternoon as one of the top athletes in the nation announced where he would be playing football in college.

Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra athlete Robert Woods is rated as the No. 35 prospect in the Athlon Consensus 100. He checks in as the nation's No. 5 rated athlete. With offers from nearly every west coast power, Woods has decided that he will be playing his ball for the USC Trojans. This marks the fifth AC100 commitment for Pete Carroll and Co. The offense should be well taken care of as all five project as potential offensive skill players. Quarterback Jesse Scroggins, running backs Dillon Baxter and D.J. Morgan and the nation's No. 1 tight end Xavier Grimble are all headed to SoCal. If Woods ends up on offense, this will be one of the most impressive play-making classes in recent history. At No. 35, Woods is the Trojans' third highest rated player in this class thus far (Grimble - 15th, Morgan - 30th).

Not more than 24 hours after we published last week’s roundup, huge news broke with the verbals of Justin McCay (No. 31 in the AC100) to Oklahoma and Kadron Boone to Texas Tech. On the day the 2010 AC100 debuts, recruiting fans got plenty of fireworks...

Three top-50 players made big news today with the biggest coming in the form of a Justin McCay commitment. The 6-3, 200-pound athlete from Shawnee (Kan.) Bishop Miege has announced that he will be playing ball for the Oklahoma Sooners. The track star and basketball star is listed as an athlete because he can play so many positions. Wide receiver or outside linebacker should be the most likely desitnations. I would love to see him on offense — especially consiedering the loaded linebacking class OU brought in last year.
